I would have to say, as much as I like Richard Thompson's original version, I think The Del McCoury Band's cover of "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" barely manages to edge out Thompson's recording.

Gareth Asher -- Who is probably my favorite singer that no one has ever heard of -- has a really good live cover of "If You're Gonna Leave" by Emerson Hart.

I was listing to "Ten Thousand Fists" on the way home from work tonight and realized I forgot one of my favorite covers. Disturbed's cover of "Land of Confusion".

How about "Try a Little Tenderness" which was covered by Otis Redding after being recorded in 1932 ??

Yep he was. First The Babys, then solo, then Bad English then back solo again.

 

I thought that was funny when Fogerty was sued for allegedly copying part of a song he wrote as part of a new song he wrote.

I have never heard a cover of Rock Candy better than the original. I have also heard several covers of I'm so lonesome I could cry, ... John Waite had a pretty good one with just a dobro and his voice, but they still don't top the original IMHO.
