I guess I'm alone in that I prefer pretty much every Dylan original over the cover version.

I'll have to think about this one. I think there have been a couple of covers I liked better. But, as a rule, it's pretty rare for me to think the remake is better than the original.

Although I love the Led Zeppelin original of "No Quarter", the version by Tool is absolutely amazing.

The Huey Lewis cover of "But it's Alright", originally done by J.J. Jackson.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.

Add his cover of "Personal Jesus" to that one for me.

I've always liked OAR w/ Robert Randolph's cover of "Fool in the Rain" better than Zeppelin's version.

 

I also love the Chili Peppers version of "Higher Ground".

Not better, but on par. Great for different reasons:

"Rusty Cage" by Johnny Cash

I like the Manson version a lot as well as his covers of Tainted Love and Personal Jesus.

I'm not really familiar with the Nine Inch Nails version of "Hurt", but Johnny Cash's version is oozing with emotion.

This is a great thread, I glanced over a lot of the answers, so I hope this hasn't been said already. BUT Fiona Apple's cover of the Beatles "Across the Universe" is amazing and the video to go with it is also great.

 

I'm a HUGE Beatles fan, so this isn't a case of me not being aware of the original.

I'm a big fan of Eddie Vedder's version of "Hide Your Love Away" as well...

 

There's some really solid Beatles covers out there, if you can get past all the bad ones.

Yeah, I'm a big Pearl Jam fan and most of the covers they have done have been very respectful or in some cases better. They are well known to cover Baba O'Riley and The Kids Are Alright and those are also great covers.

 

You are right, 90 percent crap covers and you gotta weed through a lot to get to that quality 10 percent.

I don't know why I just typed "Hide Your Love Away" when I know the song is called "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"... I think my brain stopped working for a second.

 

I've got a disc with quite a few Pearl Jam live covers on it.. "Baba O'Riley", "The Kids Are Alight", "Let My Love Open the Door", "Three Little Birds", "Redemption Song", "Forever in Blue Jeans", "Can't Help Falling in Love", "Angie", "Crown of Thorns" (if you choose to count that one)... That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but there's plenty more. I rarely skip one.
