Garth Brooks does a live version of piano man on guitar. Can't really say it is as good as Billy's, but worth hearing.

I guess I'm alone in that I prefer pretty much every Dylan original over the cover version.

 

I'd agree with you almost completely, but I personally have to give "I Shall Be Released" to The Band...particularly this version. Richard Manual's voice was made for that song.

Chuck Berry's version of "Route 66". The original was written for Nat King Cole by Bobby Troup. Cole's version is very good, but he croons too much in his version.

It's strictly personal preference. Dylan is one of the greatest writers and poets to have ever lived, but I can't stand to here him sing. I'll take any cover over the original, in his case.

OK, I'll give you William Shatner :lol:, but as for the rest, I prefer the cover. Even Garth's. Sorry, but the sound of Dylan singing makes hands start reaching for off buttons and ear plugs. To each, his own.

Honestly, I can't really think of too many. The original is almost always better, because the person who covers the song is never able to recapture the emotion the songwriter felt while writing it.

 

I would say Hendrix's version of "Watchtower" is about the only one I can definitively think of. "Blinded By The Light" is probably it after that.

Agreed for the most part, but I think Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" is a million times better and more emotional than the original.

I'm not really familiar with the Nine Inch Nails version of "Hurt", but Johnny Cash's version is oozing with emotion.

Great song but I'm not sure if it classifies as a cover. Bob Dylan originally wrote the chorus but left the song unfinished. OCMS wrote the verses around that original chorus to complete the song.

 

To throw in my 2 cents. I'll agree that Buckley's "Hallelujah" is the best cover song. All other versions of "Hallelujah" that I have heard come nowhere near to the passion that is in Buckley's.

I was just thinking about this the other day, but now I'm drawing a blank on my answers. While it may be obvious, I think the best covers are the result of a talented band recognizing something in a song the original artists didn't, or otherwise having a completely different interpretation. Covers that simply mimic the original are usually terrible.
