Referees talking to players

Does anyone have an issue with Referees talking to players during a game and using their first names? "watch your hands Mary", or something like that?

In your example, I would find it strange to hear an official give a "watch your hands, Mary" during a live ball. If it was during a dead ball and an official said "tuck your shirt in, Jimmy" then I don't think its strange or out of place.

I agree. I officiated many years ago and often "warned" versus penalizing when the offense wasn't affecting play but could in a different scenario. But I always used a number, even if I knew a name.

I stand under the basket 3 nights per week during games and have never heard a ref use a players name during game action. It is very common to hear them give constructive directions like hands off 23 or don't push.

I don't think its a big deal. I've heard coaches and players call a ref by name before.

There is a right way and a wrong way. The right way can help a situation.

I think calling a player by her first name leaves a back perception for the other team. If you don't call them all by name, don't call any of them by name. Use their numbers, that leaves it neutral for both teams.

Why does a ref feel compelled to warn players of their actions? Some do and some don't.

If you can talk them through some situations before they escalate, that's good game management.

If the refs are calling your opponent's kids by name in the pre game meeting with the captains, then you could be in trouble.

I'd rather see or hear that than a ton of fouls be called.
