If so ... I will humor you with the answer ....

 

The 15, 16, 17, 18 year olds at Colerain are bigger (maybe not Tyler Williams--but he makes up for it in the speed category), stronger and much, much, much faster.

That is not opinion--it is fact--and is not intended to degrade the program at Ryle. It was an interesting scheduling move--that benefits Colerain in terms of Harbin points. It benefits Ryle because they get the opportunity to prepare for better compeition. Overall--it doesn't benefit Ryle as much as people try to say--because they will see an offense that they are not going to see again during their season. They will benefit from seeing a fast/physical defense that will not allow Ryle to work to their strength (running the ball).

 

Truth be told ..... Ryle's biggest gain here will be financial in nature.

 

The things bolded are based on hard work and dedication to a program. The Colerain kids were not just born superior to the Ryle kids.

I strongly disagree with you. Ryle would be much better suited to play a second or third tier Cincy team. Look at how Anderson embarrassed Boone County last year and Anderson is normally a second tier D1 team when they are in D1. Besides Anderson what about Turpin or Winton Woods or Glen Este or Mason or Milford or Fairfield?

 

All of those teams would probably beat Ryle but it would be a much better learning experience than playing a team they have no chance against that runs an offense they are not likely to see in 6A.

 

I don't disagree that the schools mentioned would be a better match.

Look, at the end of the day, Colerain and Highlands are comparable teams (not style, overall quality). Ryle was not humiliated by Highlands by any stretch. They played them solidly and, in fact, gave HHS some of the toughest competition they played this year. No question HHS is still on a different level than Ryle and therefore Colerain also, but obviously Ryle thinks it is on a path to bridge that gap and capable of meaningfully competing against such an opponent. No, likely won't beat them, but I just don't think this will be some bloodbath beatdown humiliation with Ryle players left lying dead on the turf. We'll see. Time will tell. But let's ask the HHS people if they felt playing Ryle was a complete waste of their time.

We'll have to agree to disagree and re-visit each other claims in 2011. :thumb: I say Ryle loses, but is competitive. I do wish the game was next year, however, as I feel a lot more confident about Ryle in 2010 than 2011 (I just don't know enough about the current sophomores and freshman).

Coach Warner really wants to take Ryle to the next level and they have a lot of young talent in the system. Colerain is a challenge, but a mismatch I don't know.

 

If you think Ryle can beat Colerain with just a running game your going to be very disappointed. When you play Colerain you better have all your weapons ready and be firing on all cylinders. Both passing and running will be needed if Ryle is to pull off the upset. (JMO )

Obviously Anderson was willing to play Boone, but how many of those other schools are willing to play NKY teams and in this case specifically Ryle? There were rumors that Winton Woods and Highlands were talking, beyond that it is a fairly big risk for the OH schools to take unless they know without a shadow of a doubt they will get the W.

And that's my point. (Thanks). Highlands and Colerain were most definitely comparable this year and, in fact, I think most people would say HHS was a step ahead of Colerain. Yet HHS didn't annihilate Ryle. Solidly beat them, but it wasn't some slopfest. Ryle competed well.

 

Colerain is better than Ryle, hands down. Colerain is obviously the prohibitive favorite in these matchups. Obviously, Winton Woods/Anderson/etc.. would also have been nice matchups for Ryle. But I just don't think Colerain will be playing their third stringers by halftime. Colerain's coach must not think it's a complete waste of his time or he wouldn't have scheduled it. And I like Ryle's plan to step it up as they look to take away the 6A championship from the Louisville big boys. We'll find out in a couple years, I guess.

How do you teach speed? (And it is a fact that speed can be maximized through training--but you don't have more than what your fast twitch muscles allow you to develop--which is a big part of my job).

 

It will take about one series to see that Colerain has superior athletes. Sure, hard work helps. The Colerain kids may not have been born to be superior to Ryle kids (which sounds pretty arrogant actually)--but most of them were born to be superior athletes. (The ones who aren't superior athletes will be the Cardinals that you see standing on the sidelines).

I think the difficulty is the Harbin system in Ohio. The Ohio teams want to schedule teams who will have good records but that they are confident they can beat so they get their Harbin points. There are no points gained from losing games under Harbin. So the 2nd and 3rd tier teams are less likely to want to schedule a Ryle because they aren't confident they can beat them.

Colerain has 2,134 students and Ryle has about 1500 in grades 9-12.

Lets quantify this a bit. Colerain has about 800 male students in grades 10-12. In comparison to Ryle, I would suggest the two schools are very similar. Ryle is probably a notch higher in average family income but it is a very similar matchup.

I have to say that I am surprised at the Guru and any who think this game is going to be a blowout.

 

Look, I certainly appreciate the compliments of the program I follow. But I think we are confusing Colerain today with Colerain circa 2000-2004. We are not quite the same program we were at that time. Offensively, we are on the verge of a "period of discovery", if you will. I am not sure what our team is going to look like in 2011.

 

This game will be a lot closer than people imagine. I think defensively we will be in very good shape. I look forward to watching Elliot attempt to run against our defense as we typically limit every back we play to yards significantly below their average. I hope Elliot continues to develop.
