Coaches (having to use personal time or) not being allowed...

What would you say about teams that had a nice playoff run who brought in additional 35-40k of revenue for their athletic department/school?

I would assume that this money is used for athletics, not academics.

The comment was in reference to someone saying that schools are strapped for money and can't afford $300-400 for subs for a day.

The coaches did their jobs well, and were paid for it!

Now what about a teacher who teaches upper level or AP math/science classes and because of his/her skills in teaching, their students received over a million dollars in college scholarships.

I have no problem at all with a coach using their own personal time to attend this event as their time off is in the budget, but it just bugs me that so many people think HS are for sports and education instead of education, education and sports!

If there was only enough money in the budget for either a great HS football coach or a top notch outstanding Math teacher, who would you spend the money on, the Coach or the Math Teacher?

Most coaches use there professional days or get their classes covered. In Jeff. Co you had better be careful using sick days for reasons other than being sick. I think coaches should be allowed to go. I would consider it professional development. By the way who pays for the subs when principals and regular teachers go out of town for professional development? Coaches hardly ever miss school or get the chance for PD. they should get PD time for going

That's awesome and if that Math/science teacher wanted to go to a Math or Science seminar and miss a day of school, I think they should be allowed.

What about the kid who comes from nothing, but because a coach takes the time to mentor him and "teach" him, the kid moves on to college and a "student athlete". I believe that education is more important than anything, but I think that a good coach and athletic programs can teach a kid as much about life as anybody else. So to me, the athletic vs academic doesn't hold water...everything about school is an educational process from the math class to the football game, to the kid smoking in the bathroom.

Basketball and Football coaches have been able to do this in the past while coaches in the other sports don't get too.

Golf, Tennis, Soccer, Cross Country, etc, don't get this luxury built in like football/basketball coaches do.

But the money from athletics is not used for paying subs, at least as far as I am aware. The schools that are already in the finals already have to pay for a bunch of subs for the various coaches (assuming all of the coaches are actually teachers/administrators first and coaches second).

They haven't been allowed to use their personal day to attend a state competition? Of course, cross country is on a Saturday, so no day needed for that.

It amazes me how some people on here are such sticklers, I mean let's call this like it is. The coaches deserve a day off to network and spend a day amongst their statewide co-workers and go to the coaches clinic, schedule games, talk football, etc.

Some people on here act as if they are the Super of the schools and hold the budget in their hands. Why do people even want to argue about this, instead of just saying of course they deserve to go the climatic end of the their season and why bring math/science teachers into this anyway, if people want to pretend they don't go to seminars, etc and subs are called in then they are kidding themselves.

Lol, who'd want to go to a math seminar, anyway?

We sent a number of math teachers from each grade to Dallas last year for a conference during the school year.

I think they should be excused to do this. With the time coaches, particularly in football and basketball, put into working with their teams they are underpaid (atleast the coaches that really work hard). Which I don't have a problem with. Coaches coach because they love it, not because of money in most situations IMO. So I think its good to reward the coaches that work so hard all year.

Okie1, what is your agenda? :idunno:

It's professional development just like teachers who go to conferences all the time are allowed to go and the district picks up the tab for the subs.
