Coaches (having to use personal time or) not being allowed...

Featured Replies

They haven't been allowed to use their personal day to attend a state competition? Of course, cross country is on a Saturday, so no day needed for that.

Golf state tournament is two days.

We get one personal day.

Basketball coaches are out 3 days.

It amazes me how some people on here are such sticklers, I mean let's call this like it is. The coaches deserve a day off to network and spend a day amongst their statewide co-workers and go to the coaches clinic, schedule games, talk football, etc.

Some people on here act as if they are the Super of the schools and hold the budget in their hands. Why do people even want to argue about this, instead of just saying of course they deserve to go the climatic end of the their season and why bring math/science teachers into this anyway, if people want to pretend they don't go to seminars, etc and subs are called in then they are kidding themselves.

I disagree! No one gets paid to go watch a football game. I doubt that the coaches that are not teachers get a paid day off from their companies to go to the game just because they are football coaches.

If they want to use a personal day, sobeit. If they don't, go on Saturday and network and spend a day amongst their statewide co-workers. I don't think that anyone can compare a football game to a seminar. Schools are built to educate. I believe education first!

If money, budget, teachers missing school, and students missing school were a concern why do they have games during shool hours on Friday?

Let me answer that. It is not a concern.

Schools have in their budgets monies for substitutes for various reasons. Schools have built in days for make up of missed days so students are not shorted on hours.

I sub some when I am off work and I really don't see one day off for a coach breaking the system by calling in a sub. Teachers/coaches get days they can use as days off through the year, just as the rest of us get vacation days from work. No one gets to tell us how we pick our events for days off, so why should they have to answer the same question?

by there districts to attend the state football championships...what do you all think about this?

I don't have a problem with it. Actually I don't really care..

Some of the best education happens in locker rooms of athletic teams. Like it or not without sports there would be alot more kids walking the streets uneducated. A coach missing a day to spend at the state finals is probably more productive than some of the wasteful seminars that schools systems send their teachers to attend.

I think that education has to be first and fore most in our school systems. I think a coach if employed as a teacher should be able to use his or her personal days at their discretion. I think the athletic department if possible should pick up the expense for the trip. I think these coaches play multiple roles in the lives of our young men. I think a little professional development is a good thing. I also think if they have a good time while exchanging ideas with other coaches from around the state this is a good thing.

I think I think to much.

I need two days in BG.

Basketball state tournament is a Thursday-Friday-Saturday event. I always take a personal day and a sick day. I don't mind burning those days because the athletic department buys my tickets and tickets for my assistant coaches. It's been that way at the three schools I've coached at.

Something else about the State Championships. There are meetings and clinics going on the day before the games start. I do not have the agenda but it is basically a KY football coaches clinic/meeting.

For those that are not teachers I can understand why there would be misunderstandings about personal days. In many districts you get 1 personal day. In all districts that I am aware of you have to sign an affidavit stating the reason (sick, personal, etc) you were not at work. A district can come after you if you claim a sick day and you or a family member was not sick. This is the only job (I have worked other state jobs before) that required you to sign such a paper. Last year when we went to the finals we checked it as professional development.

What a number of schools do is build in the sub pay for such events like the state finals, sweet 16, etc into the athletic budget and/or it is paid for by boosters.

Okie1, what is your agenda? :idunno:

No agenda, I thought I would open the topic here on BGP. I wanted to see everyones thoughts.

Me personally, I don't think that it is too much to ask a school system to allow a coach two days for PD for this event. Most teachers get 1 or 2 personal days and it is actually illegal (even though everyone does it) to use a sick day for this. I see all the hours these coaches put in over the course of a year/ by the pay they recieve and I feel like it is poor leadership of school administrators not to throw these coaches a bone and allow them a couple days to spend at their event.

I believe in education, and I feel this is educational in nature!

We sent a number of math teachers from each grade to Dallas last year for a conference during the school year.

Your comparing apples to oranges here. In no way shape or form is a coach going to the state championship games beneficial to the education of students. The teachers going to a conference is all about learning anew idea for the schools program.

I won't argue with you about the BBall Coaches attending the games, as I think that is wrong also.

You are getting paid to teach and if the coaches leave to attend these games, who pays for the subs to come into work to teach your students and as far as calling in sick? Wow, what kind of an example are you setting for your players/students!

My guess is most of regular folks who attend any HS games/matches that are during work time, use vacation time! I know I do!

Fooball coaches spend January-November coaching their teams-they spend countless hours after practice and weekends breaking down film and game planning for the next team. Believe it or not they rarley get to spend anytime just hanging out with the coaching staff and relaxing. This is a well deserved time off. I will also say that on Thursday coaches attend a coaching clinic all day, which by the way is professional development.

Read my whole post including what I quoted. Below is what I quoted

My response was in no way attempting to compare it. I was answering the question of who would want to go to a math seminar. Well if I was given a plane ticket to Dallas, free hotel and a paid week away from school (which took NONE of my personal/sick days) then yes I would want to go to a math seminar even though I do not teach math.

Now to say going to the state championship games is not beneficial to the education of students is being short sighted. A large majority of coaches are also teachers. It is not uncommon at all to talk about the classroom while at the championship games. Many a good idea and resource has been gained from my fellow teachers that are also coaches.
