It is not uncommon at all to talk about the classroom while at the championship games.

Some people on here act as if they are the Super of the schools and hold the budget in their hands.

...or maybe they are acting like tax payers who actually funding the schools.

Crazy idea I realize.

I might have missed it but again, what schools do not allow their coaches to attend?

I assure you, when schools bring in a new football coach, they hire them for there ability to coach football, not how good a teacher they are. Sure, by the law, you can't coach a football team unless you have your degree and teach at that school, but, half of them teach P.E. anyway. I don't see the issue with them attending the state games. Because, in reality, they're a coach 1st and teacher 2nd.

Yes people talk about the classroom. I did not say we sit around talking instructional strategies, DWBs, Kagan and the such. We (or at least I) most certainly have talked about the classroom. They also talk about their kids, wife, dog, house, parents, the night before and a number of other things other than football. A majority of the coaches sit in the same area or even inside during the games. Not every coach is interested in every game. Of the past 6 years I have been as a coach I have talked about a ton of other things than just football.

Maybe this is part of the reason we have so many dummies in college and professional sports. While I know there are some very smart student athletes - they are students first and the teachers are teachers first, not coaches. Maybe I just have a different view because I went to schools that did not hire coaches, but hired teachers and we still managed to do pretty good in sports. The two schools on military posts within the state do not hire coaches, they are hired by DODEA (a federal agency) for their ability to teach and both have had succussful programs (even though Fort Knox is not doing great right now).

Any way, it should not be an issue for a coach to go to the games, but they should not get paid for it. If they are holding clinics before the first game, then pay them for the trip also (but shouldn't clinics be held earlier in the season so they can actually use the information put out). If they are going to just watch the game, the school should not pay them for going to it. Just because football makes a lot of money for the school does not justify the coach going to watch games he is not particiapating in, the money made goes to the athletic department and teacher pays comes out of a totally different budget.

If you look at the clinic scene it starts up in about Jan and goes through late spring early summer. Going to a clinic right before you start your season or at the beginning of the year is not going to help you. By then you should have your research done and plan in place.

There is also a select few places that honestly put coaching before teaching when making a hire. You get further south in AL or TX and then you might be talking a little bit different story. Many of the people doing the hiring of the coach are on the clueless side.

The coaches did their jobs well, and were paid for it!

Now what about a teacher who teaches upper level or AP math/science classes and because of his/her skills in teaching, their students received over a million dollars in college scholarships.

I have no problem at all with a coach using their own personal time to attend this event as their time off is in the budget, but it just bugs me that so many people think HS are for sports and education instead of education, education and sports!

If there was only enough money in the budget for either a great HS football coach or a top notch outstanding Math teacher, who would you spend the money on, the Coach or the Math Teacher?

School districts do send their teachers on trips. They go to clinics and seminars just like coaches. And they get days off for them.

How about all you by the book, acadmemic beaters that are wearing blindfolds call it like it really is.

Because you know as well as I do that these "overnight" and three day seminars in big cities are just as much a good time, party, have fun scene as it is educational. Heck, I know many, men and women, coaches and non coaches that go to teaching conferences for the night life of the town and may not even go to a seminar.

Oops, did I just point out the pink elephant in the room?

Not paid much Pal and not near what they deserve I can promise you that!

Everyone is paid exactly what they deserve, if they weren't then they wouldn't do the job.

I can assure you no one in the High School coaching profession does it for the money!
