Coaches (having to use personal time or) not being allowed...

Featured Replies

I would say with the time coaches put in divided by the salary or stipend they get equals around 1 buck an hour, tops! I am sure they are a few expections, but for the most part 1 buck or under per hour.

So tell us what you think they make.

It doesn't matter if it is high or low, if you agree to do the job, knowing the salary, then you are making what you "deserve". If you didn't feel it was worth it and not what you "deserve", then you wouldn't do it.

If that is true, then you have a whole bunch of coaches who think that it is "worth it" to work for one buck per hour to coach. The joy of doing what you like and the other fringe benefits outweigh the low pay. There is nothing wrong with that, but you can't choose to do a job that is really fun, but low paying and then complain that it is really fun, but doesn't pay better.

It is for the love of the game and that is why the coach's deserve to go to the State championship games and clinics!::ohbrother:

:jump::jump: I'm done with you on this one. I can see how much knowledge you have on this subject. :walk:

No, you get what you agree to or accept. I work with some coaches that get 0.00 for their time (even with pay it is not much different). They do not deserve to make 0.00. They deserve more but there is not any money.

Some of the best education happens in locker rooms of athletic teams. Like it or not without sports there would be alot more kids walking the streets uneducated. A coach missing a day to spend at the state finals is probably more productive than some of the wasteful seminars that schools systems send their teachers to attend.

Amen!

No agenda, I thought I would open the topic here on BGP. I wanted to see everyones thoughts.

Me personally, I don't think that it is too much to ask a school system to allow a coach two days for PD for this event. Most teachers get 1 or 2 personal days and it is actually illegal (even though everyone does it) to use a sick day for this. I see all the hours these coaches put in over the course of a year/ by the pay they recieve and I feel like it is poor leadership of school administrators not to throw these coaches a bone and allow them a couple days to spend at their event.

I believe in education, and I feel this is educational in nature!

Sorry Okie1, I meant theoldguy. I am with ya all the way, my friend! :walk:

I would think that districts calculate how many sick days its teachers have accrued and had that covered in the budget. So, it really is not about paying for a sub for one day (around 100 bucks).

I assure you, when schools bring in a new football coach, they hire them for there ability to coach football, not how good a teacher they are. Sure, by the law, you can't coach a football team unless you have your degree and teach at that school, but, half of them teach P.E. anyway. I don't see the issue with them attending the state games. Because, in reality, they're a coach 1st and teacher 2nd.

While I agree with you that coaches should be allowed to go, the rest of what you said is...well, bologne.

AGAIN, What schools in the state do NOT allow their coaches to go to state games, evidentaly, none.

The coaches did their jobs well, and were paid for it!

If there was only enough money in the budget for either a great HS football coach or a top notch outstanding Math teacher, who would you spend the money on, the Coach or the Math Teacher?

How many people watch you give a final exam? [About fifty is the reply.] Well, I have 50,000 watch me give mine - every Saturday!

Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, to English Professor Tommy Mayo (at Texas A&M) when questioned about his emphasis on winning and his salary.

Not trying to pick a fight, I just thought of this when I read your post. I'm not a teacher and I'm a property owner so I pay school taxes, but I don't begrudge a coach a day or two to go to their sport's championship. Maybe your school districts a model of fiscal restraint but for mine, a sub for a couple of days is a drop in the bucket. PD days are handed out for all sorts of lame things, this seems pretty legit to me.

The day English teachers get an excused (paid) day off to attend the State Spelling Bee or all academic coaches get to attend the State Academic Final is the day I'll say coaches should be excused to attend the State Finals.

And I'll disagree with you on your "not begrudging" statement, BiB. I can't get paid if I'm not at work for ANY reason as I'm self-employed. I wouldn't like my taxes to pay for a day off for a coach simply because he's a coach. Call it spite if you want...LOL.

IMO, this is a silly thread...

I am a huge proponent of allowing coaches to go.

I have gotten my teams entered in statewide tournaments, games, panoramas and exposure for my players in those things to college coaches by being at the state tournament meeting other coaches and talking about our teams.

It can be a vital way to promote and expand your program both to other schools around the state and the college coaches in attendance you have a chance to meet and talk up your players to.

Then why post?

Since your self employed. On the rare day when you do miss work, do you take the profits made from other employees and divide them among the men that did work. If you keep them then your a hypocrite. Do your employees get vacation time? I don't understand how anyone could be against the coaches useing their personal time for what ever they want.
