From the Cinti Enquirer regarding St X loss to Highlands -

"The Bombers were coming off the emotional high of a 43-13 thrashing of four-time defending Kentucky state champion Louisville Trinity, and Specht said they may have been caught looking ahead to Elder.

"For (Highlands), this was their national championship game," he said. "For us, it was Week Five. We always look at each game as a great opportunity to go 1-0. We try to keep it even keel, but maybe I need to evaluate how I approach this."

Classic rationalization ... admit it. Your team got beat.

No, it was a nice win. Nothing more. (Although quotes like this make it seem that much nicer.)

Sometimes you need to be careful of what you wish for! :sssh:

Turn, turn, turn.:idunno: It'll happen.

Didn't Highlands slip past a Manual team early in the year 19-8? A team Trinity beat 27-0. Both teams are currently 2-4. Highlands outplayed one good team in one game and has a schedule filled with cupcakes here on and will never be tested until MAYBE the finals. Talks of proxy national championships by riding on the back on Cincy X is just silly. Other than Cincy X, Ryle is only team they have beat that is above 500 right now.

Week in, week out, we just don't have the number of player's to compete at this level. If you ever look back at previous games against the Cincy schools ,Dale has a good enough game plan to compete but the fatigue factor comes into play. This year with the 2 platoon system in place it allowed him to play for 4 qtr's.

Great win but I get more excited beating CovCath. It's a every year game that decides who usually goes to state. I know it hasn't been much lately but it seems that CovCath is making a better showing of late.

Interesting. You just dissed a lot of programs.

I think Highlands would rather have the competition in KY 5A step up and challenge them...

So would Trinity and X in 6A. It is a ashame we can't find a way to get the best match ups on the field in December. Instead of watching lesser teams often get slaughtered.

No offense but when you start talking about national championships their schedule is not what I would call tough.

I watched the "#1" St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders play the "#2" Byrnes Rebels Saturday morning on ESPNU.

The stats are clearly in Byrnes' favor, but St. Thomas Aquinas won the game. It really got me thinking about how would Kentucky's top teams fair against them. Byrnes looked fantastic, losing only because of some key turnovers....but I still think that Highlands could have beaten either of these 5A teams.

Did anyone else watch this game? What do you think?

Later.

I watched the first half.

There is NKY/KY speed and then there is "South" speed. Two very fast DL for Byrnes going to UT. A qb for Byrnes going to RU. Then you have the true difference makers on STA.

No comparison. It would be ugly.

Man those teams were good. STA might be a good D3 college team.

Quite a compliment to the Highlands program to even suggest they play in possibly the best high school conference in the country year in and year out against teams with two (LaSalle), three (Moeller & Elder) or four (St. Xavier) as many boys. Can't imagine anyone suggesting any other small public school even consider that. Heck no OHIO public school the size of Highlands has been willing to play any Cincy St. X, Elder or Moeller in years (decades perhaps).

A better question IMO would be whether Trinity and Lou. St. X would and should play in the GCL where they would play apples to apples comparable teams with comparable size, resources, facilities each week. Better yet, how would the LCL Big Two (Trinity and X) fare in the OKI-CL (Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana Catholic League)? I'll define that league to include the 4 Cincy and 2 Louisville teams above plus Indy Cathedral (isn't there another Indy Catholic HS football power) plus Cleveland St. Ignatius and St. Edwards for a 9 or 10 team conference/league. Rather than hijack this thread I'll start another one with that thought.

Highlands would want none of that week in and week out. The way Dale does it now is just fine with me. Give your team a chance to win a big game and stick with that. If that means riding a win to a Mythical National Championship, then I ask, what's wrong with that.

I'm also with the people that say the rest of Ky. need to keep up. And hey OG, I'm sure your boys will be looking for the big win, but not this year. Maybe soon because the looks of things, Wirth has the program moving in the "Park Hills" direction. Couple of the "blueboys" were over last night and they are excited to play the Birds. I think that was excitement in the air.

I agree. The HHS/Cov Cath rivalry is a classic and should never go away. I think what we would like is for the Colonel program to continue their rebuilding process so that we can battle them when they're at their best. And I don't mean that as a slam against the Cov Cath program. I just don't know how else to say it.
