Would Highlands Rather play in the GCL or in Kentucky?

Featured Replies

I agree. The HHS/Cov Cath rivalry is a classic and should never go away. I think what we would like is for the Colonel program to continue their rebuilding process so that we can battle them when they're at their best. And I don't mean that as a slam against the Cov Cath program. I just don't know how else to say it.
They just didn't have the skilled players from the past. I think they have some young talent coming though.

As others have said, HHS couldn't compete week in and week out with the GCL. The bodies are just not there.

From the Cinti Enquirer regarding St X loss to Highlands -

"The Bombers were coming off the emotional high of a 43-13 thrashing of four-time defending Kentucky state champion Louisville Trinity, and Specht said they may have been caught looking ahead to Elder.

"For (Highlands), this was their national championship game," he said. "For us, it was Week Five. We always look at each game as a great opportunity to go 1-0. We try to keep it even keel, but maybe I need to evaluate how I approach this."

You don't think it's the Super Bowl for every team that plays the Bird's? National televised game and your kid's weren't ready to play?

Do you have any idea how many times St. Xavier has played on National TV? Too many to count.

I said this after the game and I'll say it again, this game meant a whole heckuva lot more to Highlands than it did St. Xavier. That doesn't diminish what Highlands did...please don't take it to mean that. But please understand that beating Elder and winning the GCL means a whole lot more than beating an out of state school on National Television. St. Xavier is already known as a national program...Highlands isn't, nor will they ever be. Dale's dreams of competing for a "National Championship" are just that....dreams. Highlands has way too much going against it to ever, and I do mean EVER, have a legitimate shot at a "National Championship." As I have said before, win 5A year in and year out competing against 35 other schools, or whatever ridiculous number it is, and be happy with that. Every two decades or so pull out a win over a big boy from Cincy and throw a two-week long party. This is as good as it is ever going to get for Highlands and that is tremendous in and of itself.

As for the Highlands playing in the GCL? Good grief....you'd be looking at a 1-3 record almost every single year. Ridiculous.

PS: As for the earlier question comparing Byrnes and STA against Highlands....are you kidding me? Byrnes and STA would blow through Highlands like they were Cooper's JV squad...silliness.:ohbrother:

I don't see a single HHS fan voting for the option. Brains and beauty are a tough combination. :D

Read my earlier post about playing in the GCL, we can't compete on a weekly basis. We did beat X every phase of the game. I didn't say we could play with Byrnes and STA! And yes I think we would of beat your Cards!:scared:

You act like St.X plays on national tv every week..:notworthy: If your kids don't get up for that than that is really sad. HHS beat that team like a drum. The score didn't show how bad the beating was..You might overlook a team for the first quarter but not the whole game.. X got beat....Period!!! :deadhorse:

This would suggest you believe this is one of the best Highlands teams in the last 10 years?

It could be, jury still out.

I believe 2004? team the Mitchell/Nevels team was better but this is a great team especially with Bardo.

That team got beat by Elder that year but beat a very good Boyle twice. They had a ton of talent on that 2004 team.

Since the HHS - St.X game turned out like it did, I'll be parting until Christmas. All this talk about how great Ohio is in football compared to Ky. football, then a Ky. 3A team takes St. X to the woodshed and all you hear is excuses. St.X doesn't have to worry about a National Title anymore, the Birds took care of that.: As for Colerain, they were never in the conversation to begin with.

BLah BLah Blah....you whining Cincy guys !! Trying to find some way to safe 'face'. Well.....'swallow' these facts. Split up the GCL schools into various schools the same size as HHS. 100 boys per class.....see if ANY and I mean ANY could compete with HHS EVER....I'll even factor out the private vs public advantage. The truth is....400 boy school (9 thru 12) sets a standard to be admired and copied. This has developed over the 50+ year history. Highlands success comes from the community, tradition, family support( the type unsually reserved for private schools), and dedicated players and coaches from little league to high school willing to always do more than the "other" guy to win.

Highlands is a magnet football school. They attracked more football players than any private school.

That said, Colerain has had run of a few good years. I remember when they were the doormat of the GMC not too many years ago. I'm betting Colerain returns to form long before you ever see Highlands have a losing season.
