Henderson was named after Colonel Richard Henderson. I have always assumed that was also where the mascot came from, Henderson County Colonels.

That's close. In 1916, the Somerset football team traveled to Louisville to face the heavily favored "Louisville High School." The hosts defense was supposed to be as hard to get through as a briar patch. Somerest obliterated the hosts 51-6. To capture the speed and precision with which Somerset had played, Louisville sportswriter Johnny Head drew upon the folk lore of Uncle Remus and the briar patch and proclaimed the team "Briar Jumpers."

Juggernaut is an actual word that means destructive or unstoppable force. Look it up in a dictionary. I don't know how that name became attached to Lloyd but you have to admit that is a pretty good team name.

 

Lloyd did not have a mascot name, then a reporter from the Cincinnati Post came to cover their football game in the 1928-29. He wrote Lloyd dominated and played like a Juggernaut. They took the name from the article .The mascot looks like a Trojan, they say there is no other high school or college with the name. I thought that was pretty cool.

yea I was pretty upset when we had the mascot "Jaguars". There was a vote over the summer before Cooper opened for the students to vote on a mascot and the options were:

 

Bulldogs

Cardinals

Royals

Titans

Jaguars

 

i think there was another one but thats besides the point. Royals, Titans? Would've been freaking sweet. I think the vote was rigged because the colors had already been decided for the school and maroon and gold fit best with the jaguars since they are kind of golden colored, but whatever....

 

Good thing about Titans, is it is like the Juggernauts... No one has any idea what one looks like, so it gives a lot of creative license on the mascot/uniforms.

What the heck?

The origin of the Raceland Rams:

 

Many may ask, why Rams? There are no rams in Eastern Kentucky, they are out west, right? Well, when the Raceland school first opened their doors, the front of the old high school was all there was, no Gymnasium, no football field, no baseball field, and Raceland had to play all their games on the road, no home games. Raceland was called "The Ramblers". You may have noticed some screen names on BGP that have this incorporated in it, such as oldrambler. The Raceland Ramblers as "we" were known, due to the fact we had no home field.

 

Years later, Raceland built a gymnasium, a football field, and a baseball field. No longer did Raceland have to play all their games on the road. The name "Ramblers" was shortened to the "Rams", we have been the "Rams" ever since. But, many still refer to the "Rams" as the "Ramblers", I like it, wouldn't mind for Raceland to be the Ramblers again, it is unique to the state, and tells a part of history.

Why is Colonels a mascot? Does it have something to do with KFC's Colonel Sanders? Is it a Civil War thing? Why not Generals or Sargeants or Captains?
