Well, you guys ... this isn't about the Mascot names, but North Laurel's first school colors were left for the upcoming seniors to vote when we were still at Laurel County High School - the colors that ended up winning were the colors of the Charlotte Hornets, BUT those colors were so popular at the time, and we were told they were expensive colors, so they went with Bush Blue Devil 'Blue' and Hazel Green 'green' for the school colors since both former high schools rested in North Laurel territory.

 

 

Now as for former mascot names I always liked Hazel Green Bull Frogs.

Bird fans please dont take offense but if I am not mistaken wasnt the original mascot the Blue Devils and then was changed due to negative conotations. Bluebirds was a little more acceptable.

Dunbar made up for it with their teams, as I recall. Baltimore Dunbar for years was one of the elite HS boys basketball programs in the country (1970s). Hard to laugh when they have you down by 30...

that are also the Camels, which would seem to be a natural fit to me;

however the curious thing is, their school colors are also yellow and purple. The Wyoming camel has a little more attitude though.

Ha ha.... I understand the finger is symbolizing "Number One" but with the finger near the face, it looks more like "Nose Picker"

 

 

I know none of them are Kentucky schools, but:

 

There's the Glenville Tarblooders - that's a favorite of mine. They were named ofter the local (and abundant) railroad workers, called tarblooders, whose job it was to re-tar the railroad ties. The hot tar that the workers used would splatter onto their arms and faces, blistering and causing them to bleed as if they were sweating blood. Now there's a tough mascot name.

 

Completely opposite to the big-bad Tarblooders, are the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School "Poets" in Baltimore. I have a cousin that teaches there, and he laughs about it pretty much every time he mentions the mascot. I would have to say that they beat the Poca Dots for lamest mascot.

 

One of the strangest team name's I've heard, though, is North East High School's "Grape Pickers", usually just "Pickers". They're up in the city of North East, Pennsylvania, and their mascot is a big grape dressed like a Roman Centurion.

Anyway, in that article, they said that the supt. of our Campbell County had traveled out there and that's where he got the name. So, I guess you could say the Camels kind of borrowed their mascot from their Wyoming counterpart.

Minor league baseball is where all the good nicknames reside. They have some wild ones! If I recall correctly ESPN identified some of the best high school nicknames a while back and number one on the list was Poca High School in West Virginia. Their nickname - Dots. Poca Dots. Their mascot is a big ole dot.

I always assumed those schools chose their nicknames because they sounded similar (or in the case of Lyon, exactly) to the county name. The Camel nickname always made me think of slow linemen and the Lyons nickname always made me think of a family of five getting out of a minivan.

I graduated from Hicksville High School (Ohio) and we were the ACES. We used the four aces of a card deck, but it is my understanding that the original nickname came from the World War I flying aces. Who knows. However, coming from Hicksville H.S. you can imagine we had many other nicknames.

That's close. In 1916, the Somerset football team traveled to Louisville to face the heavily favored "Louisville High School." The hosts defense was supposed to be as hard to get through as a briar patch. Somerest obliterated the hosts 51-6. To capture the speed and precision with which Somerset had played, Louisville sportswriter Johnny Head drew upon the folk lore of Uncle Remus and the briar patch and proclaimed the team "Briar Jumpers."
