That's how the locals pronounce it and I've followed suit. A lot of people end up saying it "Beth-luh-HAM" including my former co-host, so we did a segment with some of the students there to gently correct him in an amusingly, publicly-embarrassing manner.

They still use it. The girls teams are now using Lady Braves.

 

 

As a side note, I'm making it my life's work to eliminate "Lady" from team monikers. I hate it. It's a condescending descriptor in my opinion, as though the girls teams aren't worthy of full mascot status.

I never understood why some teams have a collar in their mascots name and the school colors are different?

Hey JBS5, I do not think he was knocking Lloyd at all, I think he just didn't know how it was attached. Look at my post on page six, I explain the history behind the mascot. I 100% agree with everything else that you wrote. My uncles played for Lloyd and the youngest one was on the 1976 team. I attended every game that year as a 7 year old.

I was also at every game. Don't know if you remember or not but Micah actually got hurt at the start of his senior year. When he was a junior, there backfield of him, Kevin Ashley, Smitty, and Mo Molitor @ QB dominated. They won the state easily and were probably a 1 pt loss at Highlands away from repeating the next year. Many of the players on that team spent alot of time at my house when I was young. That team was special and besides the nickname, they also had one of the best fight songs.

Missiles implied military force and the Sisters of Mercy changed it and added lt gold to their school colors....Assumption Rockets, run by same group went unchanged because rockets implied exploration....not military force.

Same here. I can't stand it. The 12th Region has an all-time classic "Lady" team in West Jessamine - the "Lady Colts." Yes, they use that name!

I ran into a lady wearing an Oldham County bag the other day. I said to her that I had initially thought it was a Covington Catholic bag. She then went on to tell me that they were the "real" Colonels.

 

I wanted to say something like "You can go ahead and take a seat behind Dixie somewhere."

What is the origin of the Highland Bluebird?

 

My grandpa told me a story about a time he attended a Highlands game back in 19whatever. They were playing some team outside of the area, so I guess they weren't used to the Bluebird as a mascot... He said they were ragging on their mascot for a while leading up to the kickoff. then once the game was underway, they stopped laughing about it for some reason.

The Juggernauts had one of the greatest high school coaching staffs ever assembled during that run. Hall of Fame Coach Jim "Red Dog" Daugherty, Dick Wilmhoff (30 year veteran) who played on the 65' state champion team. Hall of Famer Mike Burns a defensive genius, future head coach Rudy Tassini (both Burns and Tassini did great work at Cov Cath and Anderson), Rusty Kordenbrock and finally a young Randy Cooper (Cooper High School), everyone think Cooper was a Boone guy, but he got his start as a Jugg.

How many others in Ky have different mascots for boys and girls? And I don't just mean slapping a "Lady" in front of it, which I find to be awful.

 

Harrison County has the Thorobreds and the Fillies.

Not to dispute where he started coaching, but Raceland will take some credit for his start. Coop played his high school football at Raceland and his nephew was just named the new Raceland Head Coach after an outstanding playing career and a great coaching start.

 

Randy Cooper's family is well seated in Raceland Ram Football history.
