I always heard that when Boyle Co. High School was built they let the first class pick the new name. It supposedly came down to between two names, the "REBELS" or the "PATRIOTS". I was told REBELS was picked because of the reference to the Civil War battle that went on in Perryville. Not for sure if any of that's true, but it sure sounds good to me.

Lloyd did not have a mascot name, then a reporter from the Cincinnati Post came to cover their football game in the 1928-29. He wrote Lloyd dominated and played like a Juggernaut. They took the name from the article .The mascot looks like a Trojan, they say there is no other high school or college with the name. I thought that was pretty cool.

This is true, Lloyd High School is the only High School in the United States with Juggernaut as a Mascot!!!

Someone PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE explain what is the meaning of the Lloyd "Juggernaut"...I've been wondering that for years!!!

I think that is correct. I once read a newspaper article from 1963 after Boyle's first ever football game (I think it was against Greensburg), and the article described Boyle as "the still unnamed team." I always thought that was odd. Thanks for your clarification.

What is the origin of the Highland Bluebird?

 

At one time, like the 1930's and before, they were the Blue Devils, like Dayton is the Green Devils, but some of the locals did not think they should be Devils so it was changed to Bluebirds. Not so devilish.

I'm pretty sure the girls basketball team at Paintsville was called The Comets at some point.

Same here. I can't stand it. The 12th Region has an all-time classic "Lady" team in West Jessamine - the "Lady Colts." Yes, they use that name!

Until they change it, I will continue to contend that the worst nickname/mascot around is that of the ladies' teams of Georgetown (Ohio) High School.

 

They are the Lady G-men.

 

South Hopkins were the Tomcats and the girls teams were the Lady Tomcats. Same logic as the Lady G-men?
