Bethlehem High School here in Bardstown has an interesting nickname history.

 

It started out 100 some years ago as an all-girls school, and they've always been called the Banshees, which is a female mascot. The school was always a counter to St. Joseph Prep, an all-boys school that also took on boarders. It closed in 1968, leaving a void for Catholic HS education for boys.

 

In the early '70s, Bethlehem started taking boys, which led to the boys' teams adopting the St. Joe Prep (undefeated since 1968!) mascot, the Eagles. And that's why there are two different mascots.

 

How many others in Ky have different mascots for boys and girls? And I don't just mean slapping a "Lady" in front of it, which I find to be awful.

Ashland has Tomcats and Kittens.

 

Apollo has Eagles and E-Gals.

 

Pretty sure Bethlehem is the only one with separate, non-related nicknames.

Juggernaut is an actual word that means destructive or unstoppable force. Look it up in a dictionary. I don't know how that name became attached to Lloyd but you have to admit that is a pretty good team name.

 

I don't know why you would knock Lloyd. They used to be very competitive and in some years dominant athletically in the 70's and 80's. They have fallen on some hard times recenty but have fielded some of the better high school teams in the area. The 1976 State Championship team may have been one of the best high school teams to ever play in the NKy area. As far as the nickname, one of the most unique anywhere.

Hey JBS5, I do not think he was knocking Lloyd at all, I think he just didn't know how it was attached. Look at my post on page six, I explain the history behind the mascot. I 100% agree with everything else that you wrote. My uncles played for Lloyd and the youngest one was on the 1976 team. I attended every game that year as a 7 year old.

If I am not mistaken though the Dunbar team from Baltimore is really good across the board in football & basketball. So there are a bunch of teams getting whipped by a "Poet"

My favorite one of all time in Kentucky is the Hellier Hellcats from Eastern Kentucky. It closed in the 60's & those students ended up going to Millard High School, home of the Mustangs. Millard, Feds Creek (Vikings) & Elkhorn City (Cougars) combined to become East Ridge(Warriors)

Why is Colonels a mascot? Does it have something to do with KFC's Colonel Sanders? Is it a Civil War thing? Why not Generals or Sargeants or Captains?

William Whitley was a Colonel in the Revolutionary War and built the first brick house in Kentucky (in Lincoln County). Both Williamsburg and Whitley County are named for him. Thus, Whitley County High School's nickname is Colonels.
