I think there was a public vote first to name the new Harlan County High School mascot before the school was even started to be built and the "Knights" was chosen. My son even has a t-shirt with the Harlan County Knights on it. Then, we started having all the black bears here and all the black bear sightings, so it was changed to the Harlan County Black Bears.

Bracken County Polar Bears is an interesting one. I read here a few months ago that the nickname came about as a result of the basketball team practicing in some kind of cold storage facility.

 

I have heard it started with the Brooksville High School's name being the Bears and that the Polar part came with the creation of Bracken Co. HS. Don't know the story on the "polar" part.

That one is pretty easy. Silver Grove sits along the shore of the Ohio River. The entire riverfront area of Siver Grove has (for as long as memory serves) been the home of a large train yard. I'm sure someone from "The Grove" can add more detail to the story, but that's the basics.

 

Yeah, Silver Grove used to be home to a huge CSX yard. My father in law worked there. If you look at the city on Google Earth the location of the railyard and its size are pretty obvious. Part of it is now home to the Lafarge Gypsum plant, so I'm wondering if they'll be changing the team name to the Silver Grove Drywallers as a result.:idunno:

The origin of the Raceland Rams:

 

Many may ask, why Rams? There are no rams in Eastern Kentucky, they are out west, right? Well, when the Raceland school first opened their doors, the front of the old high school was all there was, no Gymnasium, no football field, no baseball field, and Raceland had to play all their games on the road, no home games. Raceland was called "The Ramblers". You may have noticed some screen names on BGP that have this incorporated in it, such as oldrambler. The Raceland Ramblers as "we" were known, due to the fact we had no home field.

 

Years later, Raceland built a gymnasium, a football field, and a baseball field. No longer did Raceland have to play all their games on the road. The name "Ramblers" was shortened to the "Rams", we have been the "Rams" ever since. But, many still refer to the "Rams" as the "Ramblers", I like it, wouldn't mind for Raceland to be the Ramblers again, it is unique to the state, and tells a part of history.

Of course, the worst (best if you're HS age, I suppose) part of Lloyd's nickname is when you'd see it on the girls' teams jerseys.

The explanation behind the origin of Somerset's mascot is great, but I'll let a local tell that story, as I can't do it total justice.

You are correct about Greenup County's mascot, the Musketeer. It was because of bringing three high schools (Greenup, Wurtland, and Mckell) into one consolidated school.

 

As for the worst mascot, I feel that the Poca, WV Dots (Yes, the Poca Dots) have to be in the running.

From what I've read, their gymnasium was a very cold place, so they went with the Polar Bears.
