Yes, I almost mentioned them, I really feel bad for them every time I hear the "Poca Dots". Terrible mascot.

Someone PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE explain what is the meaning of the Lloyd "Juggernaut"...I've been wondering that for years!!!

 

Juggernaut is an actual word that means destructive or unstoppable force. Look it up in a dictionary. I don't know how that name became attached to Lloyd but you have to admit that is a pretty good team name.

I'm not sure exactly what a Royal is, but it's the mascot of Mason County and Rose Hill.

 

It's a baseball player from western Missouri, of course. Actually, as an outsider I always assumed it was used as a synonym for kings and queens and the like, the way the British sometimes refer to Elizabeth II and her family as "the royals."

Even better because it paired well with Muhlenberg South: Stars and Suns. Two good nicknames, yet they went with something more ordinary for the consolidated school. Maybe they should've called the new school teams the Cosmos. (Although I think Miners would've been more appropriate, and John Prine would probably agree.)

Estill County "ENGINEERS"

Have never seen this anywhere before with any sports. Estill use to be a huge railroad county with the csx switch yard and terminal. They still are a railroad county just not as big. A engine is a powerful piece of equipment. With that short story you get the name ENGINEERS.

Allen Central High School in Floyd County.

It isn't KY but there is a South Webster Jeeps in Ohio, they are named after the little guy from the very old Popeye Cartoons.

Good point, I forgot about the Jeeps. You would be surprised, maybe not, how many people don't know where they got that name.

While I don't know for a fact, I always thought the Notre Dame Academy Panda mascot is merely a play on the letters, paNDA. It's also a nice mascot for an all girls school.

 

I think you are right on this. A long time ago before NCC was co-ed they used to have a girl's school and it was OLP (Our Lady of Providence I think) Their mascot was dOLPhins I just think it is just a play on the letters like you said.

Until they change it, I will continue to contend that the worst nickname/mascot around is that of the ladies' teams of Georgetown (Ohio) High School.

 

They are the Lady G-men.
