Do you think Hairston is gonna kill the team playing SS? Gonzo is not young either and is coming off microfracture surgery. The Reds arent a team that can really afford to punt any position in the lineup minus pitcher.

How do you figure that Hairston is Mr. Reliable? He's 33 and has spent 12 seasons in the big leagues yet only has 3205 at bats with a .259 average, 40 homers, 254 RBIs and 390 runs scored. He's never been more than a spare part his whole career. Plus he's played a grand total of 40 games at shortstop in his career with a .976 fielding percentage. It isn't realistic to expect to play him there--he's a part time player and will always be a part time player.

 

Hairston is far from reliable. I expect him to be hurt again this year, and in all honesty, he's not that different than Gonzo. I think that they're similar hitters, with Hairston being a bigger threat on the basepaths.

 

Hairston shouldn't be the everyday SS; however, I think he's capable of splitting time in left & at SS.

 

You can argue that his #'s were GABP inflated last year, but won't they be this year, too?

 

I'm just not sold on Gonzo, and with him missing all of last year & coming back from an injury, I have my doubts as to whether he can endure an entire season. I hope I'm wrong.

No I really was not. Go back and look at it, I even say they both are not that good with the bat. So as you can tell I was just talking about Janish and Gonzo. Then I went back and put Hairston in there, and forgot that I had the part about the defense after it. Trust me, if I really did put that. Then I would definitely be defending my argument, because I always do.

Gonzo absolutely cannot endure a full season at shortstop. It will be a minor miracle if he reaches triple digits in games played. However, Hairston is not a big league shortstop. He's played 40 out of 873 games there in his career and his fielding percentage would put him at around 20+ errors there per 162 games played. He isn't going to suddenly get better at age 33. The sad truth is that the Reds are woefully understaffed at shortstop, unless Gonzo suprises everyone and stays healthy they could be the weakest team in the majors at that position.

For those of you in love with Janisch, making him the everyday SS would make about as much sense as playing Juan Castro every day.

As I said I went back and edited it after I first did it. I ended up putting Hairston in there and saying he could be another option. Then was trying to say he was not horrible defensively. The next part had originally about him being as good as gonzo is defensively had orginally been after the part when I talked about platooning Gonzo and Hairston. Then when I went back and put Hairston in there as well after the platoon part, that part about being as good followed the Hairston bit. It was purely a typo. Trust me you have seen plenty of my post. I will always argue and defend my opinions, even if everyone disagrees with me. So if I really felt like that about Hairston, and it wasn't just a typo. Then I would be defending my statement about that, because I have no problem have a different opinion than others, I think I have proven that many of times on here. It was definitely a typo, because I put that in there and just didn't read what I had next after it. But trust me on it, it was definitely a typo, or else I would be defending Hairstons play at shortstop right now instead. :thumb:

Keppinger isn't a MLB-caliber shortstop, either ... he's like Hairston, best cast as a utility guy.
