Track the Reds (Week 2)

Featured Replies

On Gonzalez ... guys, this is April 15. We're less than two weeks into the season. If he's still lost at the plate by the end of May, then a change might be in order. At this point, though, he is still the Reds' best option at shortstop.

:thumb: Like I said, I am not judging Gonzalez on solely on his play this year.

I have said all along that the Reds are in bad shape if we're relying on Gonzo to produce.

I'd argue that Hairston is our best option at SS, until he gets hurt. That allows Dickerson to play LF, who I think is our best option there, too.

The bottom line is that Gonzo is getting paid too much money to ride the pine.

Yes, if he can play at least 110 games then I think he can come close. He may hit closer to .255-.260, but I think he's very capable of hitting 15 homers or so, and driving in 50+ runs.

He hasn't played baseball in over a year it's going to take him some time to get there.

Wasn't that a career year for him a couple of years ago at the plate? I could be wrong, but I think that is what I heard. So if it was a career year, that means he did better than usual for him. Now add to the fact that he hasn't played in a year and a half, plus two years older. Why are we so sure that he will do that again? His defense since he has been a red has not been as good as it use to be, and probably just going to get worst. His bat has never been that great, and well since he has been gone so long. It probably wont be good this year at all either. So why do so many red fans always talk him up, I haven't really never got the love affair for him. I am not saying he should never play, but I don't think he should be our everyday shortstop either. I think just like with LF, it should be more of a platoon with him and Hanish (sp.) or even Hairston. Hairston made some good plays at short last year when healthy. Janish is just about as good as as defensive shortstop as Gonzalez is these days, and well they both are not that good with the bat. So I just think since they basically are the same players, they should atleast start giving Janish more of a chance. If one of them starts to get a hot bat, then keep that guy in the lineup for awhile.

I'll never take anything you say seriously again.

Hairston isn't even CLOSE to as good as Gonzo in the field.

How do you figure that Hairston is Mr. Reliable? He's 33 and has spent 12 seasons in the big leagues yet only has 3205 at bats with a .259 average, 40 homers, 254 RBIs and 390 runs scored. He's never been more than a spare part his whole career. Plus he's played a grand total of 40 games at shortstop in his career with a .976 fielding percentage. It isn't realistic to expect to play him there--he's a part time player and will always be a part time player.

I'll never take anything you say seriously again.

Whoops bad time for a typo. My original post was just talking about Janish and Gonzo. Then I went back and edited and put Hairston as a guy they could play there. I forgot the part that I had after that. Obvioiusly Hariston is not as good as Gonzo at short I do realize that. I was talking about Janish when I first said that. Dang it! :isurrender::D

That was the most absurd bit of information I have ever heard in my entire life and I live with a car salesman and a politician! Hairston is absolutely nowhere near the glove that Gonzo is!

Of course edit while I'm typing and make me look bad lol atleast I know your not crazy..

Sorry, not buying that excuse. You were talking about Hairston.

I realize that some Reds fans are in love with Hairston after last year, but this is the same guy that hit .198 in 2006 and 2007 and whose numbers were so GABP-inflated last season.

Hairston is a decent player and could still help a team at 2B, perhaps, but he's no offensive star and he certainly isn't a MLB-caliber SS. He's a spare part, and that's all that anyone should expect him to be.

I was wondering why people that what I said was so crazy. Then I realized that it ready like I was talking about Hairston as being as good defensively as Gonzo. Now I am just done with this subject for now after that mess up. :ohbrother:

So you noticed him wearing TWO white batting gloves as well?

Sorry, not buying that excuse. You were talking about Hairston.

Exactly, the same Hairston that has played 40 games at shortstop in the big leagues in 12 seasons. The same Hairston with a .976 fielding percentage there. Hairston cannot play shortstop for more than a game here or there in the big leagues.

Sorry, not buying that excuse. You were talking about Hairston.

No I really was not. Go back and look at it, I even say they both are not that good with the bat. So as you can tell I was just talking about Janish and Gonzo. Then I went back and put Hairston in there, and forgot that I had the part about the defense after it. Trust me, if I really did put that. Then I would definitely be defending my argument, because I always do. :D
