I would think the other schools would have an oppo to nix it if the 37th District schools proposed it again. They have that right, don't they?

 

The other schools can press the issue and it will become a khsaa board of control decision who typically doesn't overturn issues without a real good reason. I would think this issue would be a real good reason.

I liked your post, but I disagree with this paragraph. I don't think they are trying to wring out as much money as they can. I think they are doing what they think is best in order to ensure that they don't lose money in all this. If it was really about wringing in more money don't you think they would have made the broadcast fee a little more affordable to make some money off that as well?

 

I guarantee you it is about wringing more money out of the process. This has already been acknowledged. BOK is very clear about why they have made this decision. The BOK guaranteed the schools "x" amount of money and they are doing this to -hopefully-ensure they can meet their promise. As I said - that was an admirable goal. But to make the regional experience secondary to this, is, IMO, a poor decision.

You missed my point. If playing in BOK is going to be something special to the kids (and it may actually help the winner get ready for Rupp by playing on the big court) and if BOK feels the only way that they can host the event and not lose their shirts is to not permit broadcasting, then permitting broadcasting would be adverse to the kids because it would mean the event would not be at BOK.

 

It's a shame that some people will not be able to attend the games due to money or other reasons, but come on people, we're talking high school basketball games. You'd think with all the real suffering going on in this country and with our young men and women in harm's way while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, we'd keep things in perspective.

 

You know those guys in Iraq and Afghanistan getting to listen to a little of their home town high school games, that they have listened to over the Internet do indeed make their lives a little better and is one reason why some of us are trying real hard to get the games broadcast. Do you realize just how many HHS fans from out of town have listened to the CovCath vs HHS games over the years be they regular season or football playoffs games? It just might surprise you. Heck one of the biggest threads on BGP's was when Mark and the J-man said where in the heck is Johnsonville when speaking about Johnson County. Who would have even thought anyone from JC would be listening in to a CovCath vs. LexCath game, but they did because it was the only way they could.......

 

I can tell you of people who I work with who can't attend games but do listen into these games and I know they do because the next day at work we talk about the games. Why hurt them or people like Grandpa Otto who listens in faithfully each and ever game that his grandson plays in.

 

Believe you me, there are people who would love to go but can't and it just isn't right, that these games can't at least be archived for them.....

 

BTW Mark and Dave from CovCath and Bishop Brossart both were asked to be on the channel 19 news show with Joe D but declined as they didn't want either of their schools to be hurt.

Funny how the good folks at Champion Window Field Home of the Florence Freedom allowed the CovCath Internet Radio Network and GT's crew to do the games when the ninth baseball regions were being played.

 

GT I think you too will remember the fans just pouring into the ballpark and it certainly didn't hurt the attendance for the games that I attended.... Seems some people/business get it....

 

I second someone who mentioned don't buy a thing at the concessions stands when you go to the game. Bring your own snacks in, hide them in your jacket or purse, just don't spend any more money than the cost of the ticket......

Another question that I'm curious on the answer to as well. Was the $65k in guaranteed money a set price BOK management gave and the 9th accepted, or was this a negotiated price? With the opportunity to play in a bigger arena with bigger crowds, along with eliminating home court advantage for certain schools, you would think the 9th would've taken an amount similar to what they make every year considering they don't have any added expenses to playing at BOK. I wouldn't think you'd have to throw this much money at them to get them to move the tourney to BOK.

Sure people will listen to games if they are unable to attend and the game is broadcasted, but let's not make it seem like their lives will end if they don't get to hear the games. My parents couldn't attend the regional or semifinals this year in football to watch their grandson; the games were not broadcasted; I called them at half and after the game with updates. They survived, although in reading some of the posts in this thread about how critically important it is to have the games broadcasted, I'm not sure how my parents survived. Jeesh.

The $10,000 broadcasting rights fee that was being thrown about earlier in the week is a bit of a misnomer. SMG, the company that manages the BOKC, owns the broadcasting rights to the tournament. If either the Ninth or 10th Regions wanted the games broadcasted, they could buy the rights from SMG for $10,000 and then charge boradcasters as much (or as little) as they wanted. SMG was never trying to collect $10,000 from each broadcaster for the rights. If the Ninth Region chose to buy the rights -- it didn't -- it could have allowed free broadcasting.

This is quite possibly one of the most out-of-touch comments I've seen in regards to HS sports in general and regional tournaments in particular.

 

To begin with, it's obvious that he has succumbed to the old fear of "more press = less gate," despite the fact that studies have shown over and over again that "more press = more excitement = more gate." You missed the first round game? You may not go to the second round. But if you heard the excitement of that down-to-the-wire first round game on the air...you may find you can't stay away from the tournament. Folks, we studied this in broadcast school in the late 1970s, and it's been re-affirmed by countless studies since...

 

In KY, it's especially amazing to find someone who thinks this is true. UK and U of L have almost every basketball game broadcast...yet they consistently rank in the top 5 in the nation in attendance. Can you say "positive correlation?"

 

Regional tournaments have always been the crowning moment for the HS fans. Making it to the region, with the bigger gyms and bigger crowds means a lot to kids, their families, and fans. The closeness of the schools - geographically - means there's a lot of familiarity. You see each other year after year... All of this is much different from the environment at Rupp or Diddle.

 

As such, anybody who's really interested in the games - and can - will go to the games. Although I do internet broadcasts in the 8th, I can tell you that nobody would prefer my broadcasts over the real thing...but I'm there for them when they can't go...particularly the folks who listen for that grandkid or nephew from other states - or even other countries!

 

THAT IS A FACT!!! I am amazed at how clueless the management of the arena and the AD's involved in this decision are. I would be shocked if not having any radio/internet broadcast adds 50 people in attendance, especially in BOK where you know you will get in and have a seat in comfort. Those who are interested in seeing the games will go whether it is on air or not.

My question is this. Do all schools from the ninth region or just the schools actually making the regional tourny get a piece of the $65,000 pie?

From what I can gather, the 9th Region is getting 65K from the BOK for hosting the tourney there.

40k for the boys and 25k for the girls.

I may be off 5k or so but that is the crux of the deal.

The money will be divided amongst all teams in the region.

I believe there are 24 schools in the region that will collect.

Each non-participating region school will get a $500.

The region qualifiers will get more and then it will be based on a percentage as they advance.

That was the deal struck.

Anyone think BOK can pull 65k from the 9th Region alone?

Is this too good a deal for the region to turn down? Was it a bad decision?

At $8 a ticket they need to sell a total of 8125 tickets for the event to get to $65,000...
