We all wish the best for Mitch!

 

Fortunately, this young man is not defined by basketball although I think that he could have played at some level next year. As I understand, Mitch is a very good student and person, so I am sure that he will bounce back stronger than ever for the important things in life.

Can anyone give a recap of the game? I think we all got the idea that it's a good win for Beechwood. Who played for CovCath? Did Maschinot run the point alot again? Who played well? Who had all the turnovers that have been mentioned? Were there three to four sophs on the floor together again?

OK, here is a shot at a game recap but I don't know the CovCath players well enough to tell you who the sophomores might be. Maschinot played a lot at point but Listerman rotated 3 or 4 different players in and out at the guard slots. Maschinot did hit a big 3 in the last couple of minutes and so did another guard, I believe it was #13. I would recognize their names and tell you how much they player if I hear them, but I can't tell you their names off the top of my head.

 

CovCath scored the first 2 points and then it was pretty much all Beechwood the rest of the first quarter. Beechwood was very disciplined on offense and hit the shots when they got an opening. Very good shooting quarter for Beechwood. Also excellent defense in Q1 and really throughout the night by Beechwood. Beechwood up 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.

 

In the second quarter CovCath started finding some openings and Beechwood started to struggle a little offensively. CovCath kept creeping closer and Beechwood got a little sloppy. Halftime score Beechwood up 26-23.

 

The second half really played out much like the first half. In the 3rd quarter Beechwood was sharp on both ends of the floor and again got the lead to double digits. I don't remember the score but Beechwood was up by perhaps nine heading into the 4th quarter.

 

Both teams played really tight till about the 4 minute to go mark. Then CovCath stepped up the pressure and intensity and Beechwood cracked just a little. The lead was down to 3 at one point. Then Beechwood spread the floor on offense, using primarily Romes and Beuttel on penetration and picking up fouls. Beechwood struggled a little at the line but got the lead back up to 7. The last minute was CovCath pressing and fouling. Then CovCath hit some big 3's. It was still a seven point game with about 30 seconds to go. Maile drove the length of the court for his only open shot of the night on a driving layup. Beechwood free throws and then Maile hit two big long distance three pointers in the last 20 seconds. With 9 seconds left it was a three point game. Beechwood got the ball in and Pohlgeers drove it up the sideline till he was fouled with 5.9 to go. Pohlgeers hit the free throws then Beuttel stole the in bounds pass. Ball game. 55-50.

 

Beechwood was very solid all the way round. Snyder and A.J. Smith were very good defensively inside and on the boards. Snyder played an excellent game. Beuttel and Romes did their thing with Romes slashing to the basket and Beuttel hitting the jumpers. Romes ended up with 20 with probably half of those at the free throw line. Beuttel probably had around 15. Joe Daniels and Nick Hall played a lot off the bench and were key contributors. Pohlgeers seemed to struggle a little but hit a couple of nice jumpers and the big closing free throws.

 

For CovCath, Luke Maile is just an incredible shooter. Romes was on him like glue all night and his defense was as good as it gets. But Maile made shot after shot with hands in his face. I only remember him missing a couple of shots. He hit 3 or 4 three pointers, including the two long range ones late. Maile probably had half CovCath's points. As to turnovers, I think CovCaths guards were ok in that area. The turnovers mostly happened inside as the big men tried to work around the defense by Snyder and Smith.

Beechwood will be a tough out in the District and Regional tourney this year. I dont think they can beat the Dogs but I still think they get that other spot and possibly advance in the 9th region tourney.

Tough loss for the Colonels.

 

I know Covcath is struggling but I hope people now realize that Beechwood is for real. They will get the #2 seed in the district IMO. I've said this all along since I first saw them against Holmes.

 

Honestly, I see Holy Cross taking the 2 seed and playing Beechwood first game of the districts (at HC).

I was really impressed with Beechwood tonight. I wouldn't sell them short. They have a very solid 7 man rotation, are very well coached with no weaknesses. They can go inside or outside on offense and handle the ball well. Very strong defensively. I am clearly not going to say watch out Holmes but Holy Cross better not take Beechwood lightly.

What does this run the Tiger record to? Have they lost to any local teams this year?

I agree that Beechwood is a good ball club, but IMO they will be the three seed in the district and will play HC at HC.

Beechwood is now 9-2. They lost by 19 to Holmes in their first game of the year and then lost to Campbell County by 4. Best wins besides CovCath were beating Conner at Conner by 7 or 8 and beating Ashland in the Ashland Invitational by 18.

I will say there was one bright spot for CovCath; Maschinott played with confidence tonight. He was 2/2 FG and 2/2 3PT and he had a HUGE steal/interception late in the game to bring it close. Some have said he is not ready for prime time. To them I say he stepped up big tonight.

 

Also, Coach Shumate did not look good at all tonght. He looked like the squad was going to come in at any moment in the 2d half. Anyone know how he's doing? Prayers with him tonight. Well coached team.

I hate to join the pary late but if any kid is not playing for an illness I wish for him to be healthy above all else. Basketball is so not important.

Coach Shumate was on the radio after the game and it didn't sound as serious as it looked. I agree, I was worried for him during the game. He sat in his chair for almost the entire second half with an ice pack on his neck and a trainer looking over his shoulder. But he seemed to be ok on the radio after the game.
