Prayers and best wishes from a supporter of a district rival.

A few years back they had a slight injury to a football official; now, the news reports that a man lost his hand. They should discontinue shooting off the cannon. It is not safe!

Shooting a cannon is completely safe, if it's done in a safe manner. A cannon is shot twice daily at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and there haven't been any incidents.

 

I certainly hope that it turns out to be less serious than reported. I hope he recovers quickly.

Thank you for this reply BW70. I would agree, just like anything, if done in a safe manner it is completely safe. This may be argued, and god forbid that the injuries are life threatenting, but to immediately to jump to the conclusion that the cannon should be eliminated because of danger is unncessary at this time.

After this incident, I struggle to think how the school could get insurance coverage. If they could, I would imagine the premiums would be adjusted.

I hardly think so. Though the number of injuries may be greater in football, firing off a cannon in an of itself if a dangerous action.

 

BW70, I'm guessing that the cannon shot off at Ft. Campbell may be a newer model than the one at HHS. Not sure...just guessing.

The glass half full view: Thank God it wasn't worse and Mr. Roller is still among us.

Thank God. It could have been much worse. I have known this man for a long time and he will handle this. He is a decent and strong man and his family will also help him recover and have a good life. God Bless him and his family.

Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. As others have said , One of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I'm sure he will approach his rehab and recovery in the same way he attacked running backs as a linebacker for the birds.

I'm positive that it's a newer model. I'm just stating that there should be safety measures in place when firing anything of that nature......with that said, I'm not saying that the injured father was negligent. I just don't think discontinuing the use of the canon should be immediately considered. I'm sure it's quite motivational for the boys....and the crowd.

Thank God is right that Mr. Roller is still with us. The cannon has got to go. Some are thinking with their hearts instead of their brains. Earlier this year in a game there was an accidental discharge of the cannon in the middle of a series. Fortunately no one was injured. Unless you're going to have firemen come and shoot the thing off then get rid of it. This was man was severely injured. I'll be shocked if it's back.

My heart is just sick over this terrible accident. Our joy in winning a state title is tempered (to say the least) by this injury. The man who was injured is one of the nicest, kindest people I know. No one deserves something like this; but it seems twice as bad when it happens to such a good guy -- especially on the heels of his son's injury.

 

All I ask is that we not speculate right now. There is a lot to this situation; and all the facts will be public knowledge soon enough. For now, let's just pray that he recovers as much as possible and that some good can somehow come of this for the family and the community.

 

I've purposely avoided using the word "tragic", because that would imply that all is lost. I know the man that was injured--and know that he is tough and resiliant. He will be okay. His life won't be just the same as it was yesterday; but it will be good again soon.

Very well said! It's like anything in life; when you add the human element, accidents can occur. But these gentlemen are all very well trained and willing to accept their own risk. You can get hurt doing almost any activity. If someone were to (God forbid) fall off the roof of the school building...would you tear it down? No. I see this the same way. It's a terrible accident; but I don't feel it requires any dramatic action.

I will be praying for a full and speedy recovery for Mr. Roller. I do think at this point it would require a miracle for the cannon to ever be fired at Highlands again.
