What's wrong with thinking with our hearts? I don't want this to happen again! Can you guarantee that it won't? Unfortunately the school district will be thinking with their pocket book most likely. But right now it's time to keep the Roller's in our prayers!

I'm thinking with my heart too...but also with my head. Steve is a friend of mine. He's done a lot for me in the past. And I don't want to see him (or anyone else) get hurt either. But I know that an accident can happen in any endeavor. If we throw away every item and every activity that might possibly cause harm to someone...what will we have left?

 

There's such a thing as an acceptable amount of risk. It's important to take safety measures--as does our cannon crew--when dealing with dangerous equipment. But it's impossible to live in a "risk-free" world. I know I don't want to live in a world like that. It's no different than flying on a plane, going to a fireworks show, riding a roller coaster or playing a sport. There is risk; but as long as it's reduced as much as humanly possible, the reward can be worth the risk.

 

There are no guarantees in life...and there is little life in guarantees.

We are living in a time when we can't throw candy from a parade because of the risk of injuring children; yet, some folks think it is okay to shoot a cannon off around hundreds of kids at a football game? It doesn't make sense to me.

When we played Highlands a couple of years ago up there I walked over and checked out the cannon. The crew said they had just taken over for a crew that had operated for years and were happy to tell us all about it. They seemed very knowledgeable about it and knew what they were doing. It is a very cool civil war replica fireing black powder. When they fire it, it really rocks the house. This must have been a freak accident. I don't think they should get rid of the cannon maybe take extra precautions or something. You accept risk every time you get in a car, or airplane, or a kid suites up. I certainly hope he recovers soon and he is able to live a good life with his injury.

Don't disagree but I think it's going to come down to the Board Attorney telling the district that it's not an "acceptable riks." I have seen that cannon loaded hundereds of times as you have and I'm just thankful no one was killed. One person who we have overlooked in this terrible accident was the other gentleman who suffered minor burns, lets make sure we keep him and his family in our prayers also.

Agreed. Haven't heard much about him in this, except what I was told yesterday. Hope he's doing okay.

First I heard there was someone else hurt. Lets make sure we wish him a speedy recovery as well.

Now if you can somehow give me a proper analogy for the cannon as it compares to the true value of the school building then I'll be somewhat more inclined to think about keeping the cannon. Otherwise...
