Ed Berry should have been mentioned.

This season he had 59 receptions for 1,047 yards and 11 TD. He had 2,277 All purpose yards. He ended his career one of the best receivers in the history of kentucky (statistically) with 3,101 receiving Yards, 193 receptions, and 39 touchdowns receiving.

Player performance isn't as important as the fact that BG is a large city (at least, by Kentucky's standards) that has several AP member outlets. Bigger cities = more media outlets = more AP votes.

 

Not saying the guys you listed are undeserving, but if they played for, say, Clinton County or Leslie County, they would struggle to get votes as well, no matter how gaudy their stats were.

The same problems and same complaints happen every year. I try not to let it bother me any more. If a coach from a rural area has a kid they feel is truly deserving, all they have to do is look up the voting members of the AP and shoot them out a letter or email to let them know about their player. The AP voters can only vote for players they know or have been informed of!!

Not first-team all-state numbers. Sorry, I'm sure that'll irritate the HHS faithful and Raiderbird will claim I'm anti-HHS (I'm not), but name recognition meant a WHOLE lot with that selection. Tony Bishop of Campbell Cty. was far more deserving from the NKY area.

Bowling Green high has 4 players first of second team

Warren East has a player first team

Greenwood has 2 hm players

 

So I guess we all know who the Bowling Green papers voted for right?? None of those teams listed made it past the second round of the playoffs...hmmm...

 

I guess its kinda like the cowboys sending 16 players to the pro bowl but get beat in the divisional game.

 

I think that further proves the point that it takes a whole "team" to win and not a bunch of individuals.

 

I think it would be naive to think that the Louisville papers didn't cast their votes to Louisville players and that Northern Kentucky papers didn't vote for Nothern Kentucky players.

 

I have to agree with the post that there are over 4900 players and it is impossible to evaluate and rate each player.

Name recognition goes a llooooonnnggg way with that one. I am not saying he isn't deserving but like it or not, his last name probably garnered votes from people who have never seen him play. Just like Barry Sanders Jr is on ESPN's top 10 highlights for a run that can be seen on any high school field on a Friday night, but since it is Barry Sanders Jr, he can be in the top 10.

Austin Collinsworth had 45 receptions for 793 yards and 5 touchdowns. I understand name recognition means a lot. But on the other hand, some people will never give him credit because of his name. It is definitely a double edged sword.
