Not first-team all-state numbers. Sorry, I'm sure that'll irritate the HHS faithful and Raiderbird will claim I'm anti-HHS (I'm not), but name recognition meant a WHOLE lot with that selection. Tony Bishop of Campbell Cty. was far more deserving from the NKY area.

Austin Collinsworth had 45 receptions for 793 yards and 5 touchdowns. I understand name recognition means a lot. But on the other hand, some people will never give him credit because of his name. It is definitely a double edged sword.

 

Who hasn't given him credit? He's good. Very good. And very fast. (And from all I've heard, a great kid to boot). But the stats you have listed above are not first team all-state.

Chase Richardson regular season offensive stats:

 

1439 yards, 15 touchdowns, 12.1 yards/carry

 

Not even an Honorable Mention? Unbelievable.

But could you imagine how utterly confused, complicated, and subjective the process would become if we were to take this into consideration, along with such claims of "if he played for a team that threw/ran more", "if he played against the same competition as . . .", "if he hadn't been recovering from an injury or tried to play through an injury", etc. . . . Stats do simply mean quite a bit when deciding these awards.

 

I fully agree that Collinsworth is a stud and a very good WR. But - regardless of whether he COULD have had better stats under certain conditions - he simply did not have the stats at WR that many other players did. And, IMO, those players are more deserving of this honor.

Valid points. However, we're now expecting sportswriters to not only know kids from around the state and their stats but also to find out how clutch they are. If I'm a sportswriter covering high school football, I have zero chance of knowing that.

 

I will say this on behalf of AC. He runs great routes.

I would think that these awards are more important to most of these kids parents than to the kids themselves.

George Garner from Calloway didn't get a sniff and he had over 1,100 yards and 17 receiving TDs. He was one of two 1,100 yard receivers for Calloway. Dobbins was the other and he did get enough votes to make honorable mention. No doubt the Collinsworth name did help in the selection process. I'm sure he is a good kid and congrats to him for getting the nod and the honor.

How can Hunter Adams of Middlesboro be a finalist for the Mr. Football award, and not even be a honorable mention?

I think a case could be made that if Collinsworth doesn't make it as a WR then he makes it as a DB.

Just so you know, the AP doesn't "cover" any high school sports (except the state championships). All the AP does is count the votes from its subscriber organizations (newspapers, TV and radio stations).

 

If this slight is that important to you or anyone else, go talk to your local newspaper and ask them why they don't subscribe to the AP so that your local kids can get voted on for this team. You probably won't like what you hear, but it's simple economics.

 

I did not know how it worked and this is great info. No wonder the rural areas do not get represented. It is tough to pick and all the kids that got recognized deserved it. Good to see Ky football be so strong! It does not matter much to me, but it does for the kids who play and have accomplished alot in a season. Hopefully the next polls will be more represetative. Again thanks for the info as I had no idea how this worked.

There are approx.4900 Off and Def starters in the state. To think all will make it that are deserving is not going to happen. The ones who made it are deserving and congratulations to them.

There has to be something else besides these 2 boys not having the last names of Rice and Carter!!!! Maybe the inflated numbers with an AWESOME schedule lineup had something to do with it. Lets find something else besides trying to downgrade Austin's ability because of his last name. Sure it helps with exposure but at the end of the day i would take him against either one of your players combined. Sure i'm biased here but it's the truth. Period!!!

A lot of people rail on about the AP All-State vote (justified or not) without really knowing how it's compiled. If anything, it comes down to the kids with the best stats from Kentucky's larger towns, with a few players from the rural areas salted in. It's not really cost-effective for smaller newspapers (which is what you find in the smaller towns) to subscribe to the AP wire service. Therefore, most kids in the state are never seen by anyone who has an AP vote.
