Kentucky football title games heading to Bowling Green

From the Courier-Journal website

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky's state high school football championships will be played in Bowling Green in 2009 and 2010.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association board of control voted 14-1 today to play the six title games at Western Kentucky University's Houchens/L.T. Smith Stadium Dec. 4-5 2009 and Dec. 3-4 2010.

The finals have been played in Louisville since 1979. But the University of Louisville could not guarantee that its Papa John's Cardinal Stadium would be available for those dates.

That's great! Bowling Green is a great town and is quickly becoming the KHSAA's favorite city in the state with girls b-ball, golf and now football hosting state tournaments there.

The new stadium at WKU is going to be awesome and should be a great atmosphere for high school football.

I used to live there when I was younger so now I have an excuse to come down from NKY to visit my old hometown

I am happy for Bowling Green.

I think Lexington and the University of Kentucky are fools for not taking the opportunity to have THE state football championships at THE state university.

I am not interested in the grass excuse. They could petition to have some of the championship games.

Its not an excuse, it is a legitimate reason.

And for the record, any proposal that separates the games and doesn't play them all at the same location in the same weekend is unacceptable, IMO. This needs to be an EVENT, a la the Sweet 16. Splitting them up is a set back, not an improvement.

As a former BG resident and WKU alum, this is great news. I think folks will be surprised at how much fun attending the games in BG will be.

And a lot of folks will gain an hour on the trip; more time to tailgate.

You know, it's very interesting that you make this comment because it's the exact opposite thinking here in Ohio...not that many of you care but thought I'd share anyway.

The OHSAA simply mandates that the 6 title games be played in two different stadiums over a two day period (Fri and Sat). The idea of playing them all at one stadium over two days is completely foreign to them. The fear of overtimes and/or unforseen complications scares them into thinking it can't be done so they insist on two venues, artificial turf, and in very close proximity to each other.

We here in Cincy have been trying to get the OHSAA to move the games from God-forsaken Stark County (e.g. Canton/Massilion, OH) for years and with two beautiful facilities like UC's Nippert Stadium (best place to watch a High School game other than at a high school ever, IMO) and the home of the Cincinnati Bengals, Paul Brown Stadium, we certainly could do it. They are less than 10 miles apart and would provide a tremendous atmosphere for everyone there.

Alas, it isn't going to happen. I've never gone to any of the KY state title games before and them moving to BG probably isn't going to change that but if it's better for the masses, so be it.

We should have the KHSAA finals at Paul Brown instead of at Bowling Green

Congratulations to the University of Louisville for standing up for the Football Playing youth of Today and the Future! Guess I won't be seeing anymore Championship games.

Good Luck to All!

This will really hurt attendance IMO. The casual fan from nky or eastern ky that was willing to make the hour and a half trip to the Ville to see some good hs football will no longer make the travel considering it will now be a 3-4 hour drive.

Being a Highlands fan though, I'll still have a reason to make the trip every year. :D

Road trip!

I like the way you roll.:thumb:

What were they supposed to do?

The date of the championship games is the same as the final Big East regular season game. They couldn't guarantee that the stadium would be available that weekend.

I'm not crazy about this myself but there was nothing that UofL could do, that is unless you expect them to give up any shot at hosting their final RS game every year.

How about you stepping up for HS football and making a road trip.
