May 8, 200818 yr It's going to happen so what will you do? The time frame given was 6 months to a year from now with two years being the longest time we have until this occurs. I will have to quit my job and take two part time jobs that are in walking distance of my home. What changes will you make and who do you blame for this. I drive 700 plus miles a wek with my job and get very little for mileage. Schawn food is the second lowest paying company in our area when it comes to mileage pay.
May 8, 200818 yr Car pooling that was popular when my parents was going to work 30 years ago. Wonder if Cincy had wished they had put in the light rail that has been bandied about for the past 20 years and neglected. Only major things that it will change in my life is maybe getting rid of the van and get another sedan that will get 30 MPG or higher. Might even look at a hybrid. The other major changes would be no luxury trips into the big city.

May 8, 200818 yr I heard that a barrel of oil is now $122 and could be $200 in a few months, and gas prices rising to $6 per gallon. If the $10 prediction you mention comes true that will be down right scary. It would cost me $250 to fill my van's tank. We have a teacher at our school that drives from Lexington everyday and back, a round trip of about 175 miles. We have several Owsley County residents that commute to Toyota everyday, a round trip of about 200 miles. I don't know what people such as these will do?

May 8, 200818 yr If this happens, the $10 a gallon theory, then we will officially be in a depression. At $4 a gallon, budget cuts are increasing as well as food. Even the middle class will be stricken with povery. What that means for the lower class, I have no clue. Society will be chaotic though because of oranizations that cater to the les fortunate will be out of volunteers, resources, etc. Washington, cannot let this happen or it will ruin every chance we had for a resurge in our economy. My car gets 26 miles to the gallon, it just isn't feasible that I would have to pay $120 to fill my tank for 312 miles of driving. That is 5 trips to work.

As soon as we start production on our oil supplies the cost per barrel will drop. If Congress would get off it's collective behind and 1. Open up Artic National Wildlife Refugee, 2. clear the way for new refineries, 3. pass emission standards for coal to oil plants, and 4. increase use of nuclear energy- we would be well on our way for energy independence. We have enough oil in various places including shale oil, oil sands, and coal reserves to meet our needs now and for future generations. As long as we stick to producing our own fuel we'll be fine. The problem is once we start down this path OPEC will begin to pump more, flood the market and the price per barrel will crash. (it happened in the early 1980's) Get Congress to move forward on a real energy policy instead of a gas tax holiday and ethanol from corn and we can have a stable reliable fuel supply without Middle Eastern issues.

Shipping would stop, food shortages would happen, and car sales would be virtually nil. I can't see the government letting that happens. $3 and $10 a gallon is a ridiculously huge difference.
