Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

You're lumping all private schools into the same boat because of what one did, and yet we are the ones that are arrogant.

And I'll continue to point out what I feel are inconsistancies on the public school side every time. This is one of them. The public school side wanted no part of increased enforcement last October and yet now they (as reflected by the posters on here) want just that. You can't have it both ways.

Not all private schools but if the shoe fits.........

I remember the Herald Leader saying that 16 of the 18 students in question were athletes, but did it specifically say which sport? Just curious as to why this thread is under the football forum?

All I know is when I started my thread Saturday actually asking about this issue the only sport that my source had mentioned was Football. The article did not specify any one sport however so potentially other sports might be involved.

To be honest, I've read the article a few times and frankly I am not sure if that is the case or not. On one hand it sounds like maybe it was simply once a year deal or something but if that is the case it isn't stated well causing my confusion.

I understood it to be in one school year, from the article, but I don't know that for sure. Maybe someone else can say for sure.

Maybe someone can help me with this. LCA started football in 2000 and for the first three years, they were horrible. Then comes in Rains and within three years, they’re beating Beechwood. Having seen LCA’s Middle school football program over the past few years, it’s hard for me to believe those teams in which I saw would be good enough so early to play with the big boys in the state. ;) Now, they’re one of the best programs in Class A. All of this has happen in a matter of five years. Their middle school teams were good but they weren’t great … so that leads to the question … how many of those kids that are on the squad now, played Middle School football at LCA? In college, a coach normally build his football program with junior college players and once those players got settled in, then he would build around them. What did LCA do to build their program so quickly? (I’m not buying the weight room thing :irked:) - A lot of us would like to know what they did to get their program to were it is today, so maybe some of those programs can do the same things LCA did and just maybe one day, they to can compete against the elite each year. This is just a thought and I’m not accusing anyone of anything! :thumb:

I wonder if open enrollment does nothing but feed the myth of one school being better than another.

No different than in elementary when one teacher is considered to be the better teacher because they end up with the better students because of parental request.

What I mean is that your child at Rockmom at BGP elementary. You make your kids study and do their work. They do well and RM is a good teacher. You tell a few parents at BGP church on Sunday that RM is a good teacher.

And those parents who share the same mindset of you in regards to education and your kids getting their work done, request RM the next year. And the self-fulfilling cycle begins to work. RM gets a reputation as a great teacher and while being a good teacher, it more comes from the parents expectations and allows her to do things.

Can you really select your teachers in public schools? That a case of the inmates running the asylum. I asked once (JUST once) 8 years ago if my daughter could have a certain teacher the next year, and in a round about way was politely told to get lost. The principal was right - it was none of my business. You select the school, not the teacher.

There are some publics out there who will lure student athletes to their schools... And yes if KHSAA found out about it I'm sure these certain schools would never get to participate in championships ever again.

I don't buy it. This incident happened this year, and I'm intentionally vague to not harm anyone.

A girl played on my daughters Catholic HS team for one month, including 2 official games. She was one of two captains on this team, a solid athlete. She was then admitted to a Jeff County Public school on opening day, and left our Catholic school, getting her 1st two months of tuition re-imbursed. She was told she was the last kid admitted to said school. Anyway, our very next game was against this same school, 6 days later. Our old captain now played against the school she played for just a week before. It was a very strange feeling to that game. The mom spent half her time in our bleachers.

Of course, our private school had no problem with this, since this is what the kid wanted, and we support what is best for the student. We lost a fantastic girl, who happened to be a fantastic athlete. However, if the roles were reversed, am I to assume all the private haters (which is a more honest description than anti private) would not be freaking out over this situation? Because I have seen them upset at much less than this.

PS This same school also took another girl from our school 2 weeks earlier, and she just happened to be the top scoring student on our entrance exam. My daughter was 3rd, was offered by this school and decided not to attend. We had applied just in case.

I only mention this because of the pervasive insinuations it only happens the other way around.

By the way, the only thing that the KHSAA hung their hat on in denying eligibility to Mitchell was the fact that the Mitchells had failed to sell their former home in Florence. Since that decision, the KHSAA has on several occasions started granting eligibility even if the former residence was not sold. They've come to their senses. There are many, many legit reasons not to want to sell former residences. The KHSAA didn't even explore why the Mitchells didn't want to sell their former residence; rather they took a hard and fast position that a move is never bona fide if the former home is not sold; a position that they no longer follow. Just a FWIW.

Wow, that's crazy, I never knew that. I kept my 1st three houses because I lived in them while renovating, rented them instead of selling, then moved to another project. I can't imagine I could have jeopardized my kids eligiblity, if that applied in my case. What country are we living in anyway?

You Know I have just been reading all of these posts and I could not believe that LCA's upper management would let this go on. As for the fine and nothing else, This does not surprise me in the least by KHSAA. I have seen it all. What makes you mad is that some teams work there butts off with what they got and when someone cheats they look the other way. How can it get better. When will it end.

What about the championship they won and teams they beat to get there? Shouldn't they have to forfeit or is that too harsh???

I am just thinking out loud and not saying this has any merit. But what I am hearing is banning LCA in totality, would it not be reasonable (and I have no problem with this as an LCA supporter) to have the sport that benefitted be the one to forfeit games or be banned? Just talking out loud, as I said before, I am in no way of defending anything, I am upset by this. For one I think the boys basketball team will be the ones to feel the anger of most of this, and I would venture to say, have not benefited any. My heart goes out to my son who is going to have to hear things slurs that will be slung at ball games. My feeling is that for some, no punishment will ever be enough, but that is human nature I suppose, and if the roles were reversed there is no way of my knowing how much would be enough for even myself. A term comes to mind, guilt by association, we have all been there, I guess another life lesson for young men and women.

Crazy indeed. I was sitting in court listening to Judge Wehr ask the KHSAA why they denied eligibilty. When the KHSAA's attorney said because the Mitchells had not sold their former residence in Florence, Wehr about laughed out loud. He even commented that there were many reasons why people don't sell homes when they move. But as God as my witness, that was the reason stated by the KHSAA. I heard it in open court and saw the file. Heck, I talked to members on the KHSAA Board of Control and they said the same thing. Yes, crazy indeed.

That would be enough if the folks that were doing this were called out and banned also from ever participating in LCA sports again.

I could agree with that totally. Get the ones in question out and go one as it never happened.

This could not have happened!!!!! Athletics or winning at athletics at all costs is not included in the LCA mission statement below...taken from their website.

LCA Mission Statement

The purpose of this independent Christian school shall be to provide a creative, loving academic environment for children to grow spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically, and academically through individual and group learning experiences under the guidance and nurture of carefully chosen Christian teachers, administrators, and under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It shall be the purpose of Lexington Christian Academy to encourage all students to grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to emphasize the value of the eternal soul, the worth of the individual, the love of God for man, and the kinship of all peoples as taught in the Holy Scriptures, while providing students with the opportunity for achieving academic excellence.

Maybe someone can help me with this. John Hardin has only been in existence since 2001. In their first year they won 3 football games. In 2002, 2003 and 2004 they won 6. In 2005 they were 11-2 with a win over Male in the playoffs and a 1 point loss the St. X (Victor Anderson's senior year). In 2006 the won 7. Finally, last year they were 12-0 before losing to Bowling Green in the state semis. Now I'm not accusing anyone of anything but I sure would like to know how John Hardin built their program that quickly.

I would hope LCA will do the right thing. What that is, LCA knows how deep it gets. Its hard to say whats going on there. Its a shame I really respected their program.
