Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Featured Replies

All said and done LCA, with all of its behind closed door cheating could not realize the prize in the first sport of the year, football. Congrats to the rest of the 1a teams for playing within the rules. Cudos to the kids that did it the right way at LCA, and the parents that sacrafised. Shame on the parents of the athletes that took the handout, that they had the gall to give this team a black eye it will not soon recover from, if ever.

Being a father of one of the players that took LCA down, I can only feel for the teams that LCA took out of the playoffs, it would have been an honor to play a "true " champion.

Just interesting that most of their kids attend LCA, what does the name ICE stand for any way, or does it stand for anything? Guess this would fall under the parent recruitment catagory then!

ICE stands for nothing... just a name chosen a long time ago when the program was started.

When does 3 of 9 players mean "most" attend LCA?

A kid/parent choosing a school because it is well known for any sport is not illegal and or recruiting.

Should it be illegal if the coach mentions to them about his/her school?

If that is what the KHSAA rules states. Yes.

I don't think we are that far off from each other.

"Monetary gain", and correct me if I am wrong, the article stated that at least one student/athlete received over $10,000, and several people have stated that tuition at LCA is $7,000 give or take. I see that as monetary gain.

I don't see going to a school for free as monetary gain, if you go to school "A" and it cost you the same as going to school "B" or "C", then that is not monetary gain, but if you make $3,000 for going to school "A" and make nothing going to school "B" or "C", that is wrong.

Monetary gain is recruiting pure and simple. Contacting a student/athlete, and asking them to come to your school is recruiting. If the student/athlete or the parents of the student/athlete contact the school and inquire about attending that school, that is not recruiting.

I am having some confusion on this part that you are mentioning here. Now I know LCA's tuition is approx $7,000 dollars a school year. From how I took the financial aid, it seemed like the $10,000 for instance provided for that one person was the only amount provided ever. Now times the tuition by four years that the student attends the school and suddenly the family is making no money on this.

I guess my point is, are these athletes recieving $10,000 dollars a year? Cause then you and a bunch of other people in this thread are right in assuming the family is getting extra money here. However if the student is only recieving the one lump sum then aren't they only recieving one year's tuition plus a little less then half of another year's tuition? Then no money goes in the pocket like it seems to be claimed is what is happening by other people who have read this article.

I think the assumption that it is per year is probably based on the fact you must re-apply for financial assistance each year.

FWIW, not trying to stir the pot, but LCA's fine is 1/2 of the fine Lexington Catholic recived as punishment, and I know that not as much money went to those involved when Lexington Catholic violated the rules.

I assumed from the article that the students in questions were recieving tutition plus more money.

I guess I should have said 33%?

Covercorner brings up a great point. I believe that LC had a lot less students and much fewer student/athletes when they got in trouble. Anyone know what type of system the KHSAA uses in assessing the fines or is it just simply pay our bills and a bit extra?

If the KHSAA wanted to stop this behavior the would rule the kids ineligable and ban the schools from post season play.

With the kind of money floating around at LCA this was no more than a bug on the windsheild.

I've wondered the same thing about LCA's fine versus Lex Cath's. I also know that less money went to those involved w/ Lex Cath's violation. In fact most people involved w/ Lex Cath's issue were students already enrolled at the school fromm what I understood who needed aid for whatever reason, and I don't believe everyone was an athlete though I have no clue the official breakdown. I guess the only issue that might have made Lex Cath's issue worse was that the money provided was directly from the school and not from an outside organization.

As for your first point, I understand this assumption and if accurate which as I've reread the article it very well may be then I'd say LCA's violation does provide its self to a lot of questions.

I was told by a person with the KHSAA at the time of the LexCath issue, that there had been a lot of smoke with LexCath and they believed they were involved with things but could not get the proof. Once they did, they were going to come down with the hammer.

That might be the reason why LexCath's was more.

Rev. Willis Polk of Imani Baptist stated that "the purpose of providing financial assistance is to help create diversity at LCA and provide a Christian education to minority students."

Who believes this garbage?

I would assume that the KHSAA thought that Lex Catholic's violations were more blatant than LCA's and since I'm not privy to all the info involved with this case......................I would have to reason that it's fair.

If the KHSAA wanted to stop this behavior the would rule the kids ineligable and ban the schools from post season play.

I have to agree with you. If this is going to be the punishment for this type of rules infraction, why doesn't every one do it. The chances of getting caught are slim and there are no real consequences.
