Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Now using Madison Coutny is not a good example for the point I want to make, because Model is located there, but if the county in question was Clark or Jessamine: I don't know if either of those counties have a traditional or academy program that is availiable in some schools. Dunbar has some type of Math and Science special program I beleive. If that program is not in your county, are the educational oppourtunites truly the same..I don't know? From my experience, I would have trouble beliveing that in some counties, the educational oppourtunity is not equal within the county, much less county to county.

That slipped my mind when thinking about Madison County, it was the first county that came to mind for me when thinking about counties neighboring Fayette.

My point was more to the supreme court decision that said that there cannot be huge differences in educational opportunities and educational funding in different parts of the state.

I do wonder what is going to happen when some parents complain about the unfairness of the magnet school programs in Fayette and Jefferson and others around the state don't have that opportunity.

Hmmmmm I have done that, have you? Gold mine? Not so sure, as evident by the fact that when my son tore up his knee at basketball practice, we even had to find our own crutches for him to use. Certaintly not the paved hallways of gold one might think.

I can ony speak to the basketball program, and trust me I struggle to make the tuition, and even though my son has been a starter at all levels since the 7th grade, we have had the same EXTRA athletic fees with no assistance, or wait maybe he just isn't that good :sssh:. I can't speak to the other sports, and to be honest if they did recruit then I am ashamed, but as to the basketball team, well most schools still enjoy seeing us on their schedule as a win. I don't see LCA putting that much fear with our guys dunking every time down the court, or our towering GIANTS on the court. We are just a small school that comes out of a fairly weak 11th region, that typically only has one strong team annually, and we have been knocked out of the State All A the last two years in the first round, so not really invoking fear. Again I can only speak to the basketball team and I really do not feel there is under the table recruiting for the next all state basketball player, we just get by.

Again I will say if the other sports did recruit, then I think it is a sad thing indeed. However, my heart goes out to the kids and parents who do sacrifice, out of their choice I might add, to pay the tuition, to pay the athletic fees, and try to do things the right way, because now our sons and daughters are like the baby thrown out with the wash. Trust me there are some great young men and women, just like at the public schools, it's a shame when adults screw things up, even IF there were the best of intentions (helping minority students). As always the kids ultimately suffer, both public and privately educated students. I went to public school, and played public athletics, there were things that went on there that were unfair, but when imperfect people run things, imperfect things will happen.

Interesting about not thinking it goes on in basketball, I guess you missed the new 6'1 Freshman Transfer from Scott County that came in this year, after he was "encouraged" to join the AAU Lexington Ice which is full of predominatley Lexington Christian Kids, would be interesting to see who funds that AAU team as well and where they practice, wonder if they practice at LCA?? I guess everyone is obvlious to that as well.....by the way, the kid from Scott County,he can dunk!

It's ironic that someone brought up Madison County since LCA had two seniors on their 2006 squad from Richmond, and Lexington Catholic had another (who was an absolute stud at that).

The courts may say someone is getting the exact same education in one school as they would in another, but you and I both know that sometimes a student would thrive better in a different school setting.

Personally I just don't like the idea of forcing a child to attend one school or another on account of where they live. It infuriates me, which is why I will never live in a county without an open enrollment policy if public schools are the way I will be educating my children.

Even so, my children will likely be attending Catholic schools anyway. The last few generations of my family have attended them and I feel they will be the best educational opportunity for mine as well. Thankfully I don't have district boundaries keeping me from sending my children to any of them I wish.

I wonder if open enrollment does nothing but feed the myth of one school being better than another.

No different than in elementary when one teacher is considered to be the better teacher because they end up with the better students because of parental request.

What I mean is that your child at Rockmom at BGP elementary. You make your kids study and do their work. They do well and RM is a good teacher. You tell a few parents at BGP church on Sunday that RM is a good teacher.

And those parents who share the same mindset of you in regards to education and your kids getting their work done, request RM the next year. And the self-fulfilling cycle begins to work. RM gets a reputation as a great teacher and while being a good teacher, it more comes from the parents expectations and allows her to do things.

Now in the same school, you have Rockpride doing a good job but he is not requested by the clique parents and so he gets the kids that parents make no requests. He takes a kid that is reading two grade levels below their grade level and by the time they leave, reading at grade level. Truly a great teacher. But that kid has a parent who doesn't really care about their child's education and they don't pass on the word about rockpride being a great teacher. And because the parent may be from a lower social class, the clique parents are not going to listen to their opinion anyhow.

That happens all the time at almost every elementary school in the state.

It is a self-fulfilling myth and doesn't really indicate which schools are truly doing a great job and which are not.

National Merit finalists don't determine which school is great. # going to college scholarships don't either. Governor Scholars don't either. Etc, etc.

There are many, many intercity or rural schools that teachers do a better job than any other school in the state. But because their great job is getting a kid who hates school and is several grade levels behind up to the point they are graduating and wanting to go to college won't draw the headlines in the paper, they are overlooked.

LCA has nothing to do with the ICE. The ICE do not practice at LCA, and are funded only by parents, and do not receive a penny from LCA.

I would bet that LCA is not involved in that funding.

And that is my POINT on where the recruiting is going on hot and heavy. AAU teams are breeding grounds for recruiting. Where parents are in the stands talking to other parents. Kids are talking to other kids.

LCA can be receiving great benefits from the AAU program without being involved and only the parents/players being involved.

In fact, I will go another step and say that you CANNOT be a successful HS program in basketball WITHOUT having an AAU type program that goes outside of your area to play. And it might just happen that a kid off of that AAU team ends up playing at your school. Happens all the time and everywhere in the state.

Some programs just do it better than others.

Entertaining analogy. I like the name choices. :D

The concept of requesting teachers is something I am unaccustomed to, so I cannot really comment on it.

Same concept of open enrollment but instead of the 4 grade level teachers to choose from, it is the schools in your area.

I am curious to hear RM's view of my analogy.:p

Just interesting that most of their kids attend LCA, what does the name ICE stand for any way, or does it stand for anything? Guess this would fall under the parent recruitment catagory then!

Where is the big private supporters now crying education is why kids go there and all that rah rah...................

I am right here!! My kid went to a private school for the education and the over all experience. He was an OUTSTANDING athlete and got NO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE EVER!!!!!!

I hate to see that this happening. Sad thing is it happens in the public schools too...just cant' be tracked due to no tuition paid.

Again, I do not agree with any kid being recruited for any reason prior to the college level.

I am not sure I agree with the bolded. If a golf coach with a child playing in your friend's tour run into another player that was talented but their school did not offer a team in that sport, what would be the problem with them mentioning their school and the opportunity to play? This would be more of a girls' sport issue than a boys'.

Honestly, I still think the way to solve this problem is the division should be at open and closed enrollment and NOT private/public. Let the open enrollment division recruit.

Are you accusing LCA of turning away students so they can keep their enrollment figure down? Got some proof of that?

Most private schools I know of don't turn anyone away that's willing to pay the tuition and fees.

I see it as a way of controlling growth.

A kid/parent choosing a school because it is well known for any sport is not illegal and or recruiting.
