Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Featured Replies

If LCA were providing "spending money" to student athletes to attend the school I could understand the enticement. "Tuition assistance" is nothing more than what is available at every public school in the state... every one.

What is LCA supposedly offering a student athlete that is not offered freely to every student at every public school in the state?

Really, what tuition assistance is available to MY CHILD if they want to attend Highlands? Highlands give any scholarships or tuition assistance for students living outside of the district?????

I have long thought that the recruiting going on today has zero to do with the coaches.

I agree. Coaches today look to boosters and parents to do that for them. I still believe that they are involved in the sense that they will convey the needs of his/her team and others go from there. When this happens very hard to prove that a coach was behind it.

The KHSAA does not mandate the boundaries, those are put in place by the individual school districts. Jefferson County has open enrollment that allows students to attend schools anywhere in the county. Although I would like to see statewide reciprocal agreements to allow students to cross county lines if the parents want them to.

I do agree with you though, I would like to see everyone have the same chance to attend any school they like. I personally do not understand how you can justify not allowing parents to choose what they feel is the best thing for their children without forcing them to move.

Open enrollment within the county is not the same.

Legend, I appreciate what you say in your post. If you want to send your child to a private school for a better education, well and good. However, when you look at the investigation into inappropriate financial aid, I believe it stated in 16 of the 18 instances the money went to students who were involved in athletics, thus the reason for KHSAA to become involved.

It is no different in public school. Many people want to send their children to schools that provide a better education. Unfortunately, we have boundaries we cannot cross and our children are not allowed to attend the school of their choice. Instead, they must go where the boundary lines dictate, or they are forced to move into the school district in which the school is located that provides the better education. I don't know about you, but for most people it is extremely difficult to relocate at the drop of a hat and the children ultimately suffer.

I simply feel it should be the same for everyone. If the public school are to compete with the private ones, then the KHSAA should lessen their control and open the gates so children can go to school where the education is the best, as is the athletics. You can't fence in one school and let the other one run wild. Make things fair for all and then these situations would work out on their own!

Bolded is not exactly accurate. Your child could attend an out of district school if the school was willing to accept you. You would have to pay tuition, same as a private school.

DIFFERENCE is that at the private school, you can receive tuition assistance to help and entice you to attend that private school. At the public school, you cannot receive tuition assistance (I will call it that because it seems some are highly offended when you call it a scholarship and in today's PC world, I guess I should do that.) like you can at the private school.

Rev. Willis Polk of Imani Baptist stated that "the purpose of providing financial assistance is to help create diversity at LCA and provide a Christian education to minority students."

Okay does anyone know the break down of minority students? Or where the all one ethnic group?

PepRock, parents can take there kids where they want for school. They just can't play sports.

I am aware of that, but I also mentioned that I would like districts to allows students to cross county lines too.

Not exactly accurate on the bolded. The state assigns to the school districts what areas they are responsible for in educating the children of that area.

The school district can CHOOSE to expand that area but then it goes BEYOND what is their responsibility in educating children.

For example, Holmes cannot choose to NOT educate students from the Covington area but could choose to educate students from Newport. So, the local boards do NOT have full control of setting their boundaries.

Yes you did, my bad.

I believe that the funding will become an issue.

Very naive to think that it's all about getting minorities in the classroom and not the athletic playing field. If a school recruits, public or private it is wrong. Scholarships are used as a way to get athletes into private schools.

Why not? That bothers me too.

A parent wants their child to attend Henry Clay to play for Coach Simpson, but they live in Madison County. On account of a the parents' jobs they can't move, but they want to give their child the best chance possible, as they see it, to excell in the classroom and on the field. What is wrong with that?

Maybe it is because schools are about educating the child and the state courts have said that the education opportunities in Madison County have to be the same as in Fayette County. So any move is NOT based on the EXACT reason why you are supposed to be choosing where your child is educated.

When they make the decision to allow transfers for purely athletic reasons, than they have given up the pie in the sky that schools are somehow about educating children and not athletics.

It will never happen but the BEST THING TO HAPPEN to education in this country would be to move athletics from the schools and to the club scenes. No athletics, except for intramurals, at any schools. Let the schools be breeding grounds for learning not athletics.

To the bolded, where did I say that the State doesn't? I just said the Athletic Association that governs High School athletics does not mandate them.

To the other, I think that a school should have the responsibility to educate anyone who wants to have en education there provided they have the space. Districts and counties make no difference to me.

Now using Madison Coutny is not a good example for the point I want to make, because Model is located there, but if the county in question was Clark or Jessamine: I don't know if either of those counties have a traditional or academy program that is availiable in some schools. Dunbar has some type of Math and Science special program I beleive. If that program is not in your county, are the educational oppourtunites truly the same..I don't know? From my experience, I would have trouble beliveing that in some counties, the educational oppourtunity is not equal within the county, much less county to county.

The courts may say someone is getting the exact same education in one school as they would in another, but you and I both know that sometimes a student would thrive better in a different school setting.

Personally I just don't like the idea of forcing a child to attend one school or another on account of where they live. It infuriates me, which is why I will never live in a county without an open enrollment policy if public schools are the way I will be educating my children.

Even so, my children will likely be attending Catholic schools anyway. The last few generations of my family have attended them and I feel they will be the best educational opportunity for mine as well. Thankfully I don't have district boundaries keeping me from sending my children to any of them I wish.
