November, 1977. My wonderful girlfriend (now wife) accompanied me to the 3A playoff game between Doss and Southern. Doss featured an all-state running back (Shawn Donnigan). Both teams had perhaps one loss. The game was played at the Fairgrounds in Louisville.

The temperature may have been in the teens, and there was a swirling snow and bitter wind. Although we were huddled together, my girlfriend was still shivering. An older man (must have been 40 ) was moved by her plight. He had just returned from the concession stand and gave her his hot chocolate.

 

Donnigan had a monster game. He was a power runner, and had bowled over the Southern defense all night. The game went into overtime, and Southern scored first and converted the PAT. During the Doss possession, my girlfriend, who new little about football, commented that Doss would probably have Donnigan run the ball. It occurred to me that if she realized this with her limited football exposure, everyone in the stadium, including Southern, must realize it. Despite being keyed on by what seemed like the entire Southern defense, Donnigan bulled into the end zone to pull Doss within one. Doss' conversion attempt failed.

 

My wonderful wife still sometimes accompanies me to high school football games, but none where the temps drop to the teens.

I have a couple I will share:

 

ca. ~ 1976: Trinity vs. BD at old Cardinal Stadium in the playoffs. Wind was blowing something feirce, 35+ mph. The wind coupled with freezing temperatures made for a very cold game. Both teams came out of the locker rooms before the start of the game and second half just in time to get their teams on the field without a penalty..... Coin toss was the biggest play in the game..... Trinity won the toss and took the wind.... I think Trinity won 7 - 0. I cant remember the exact score, just the weather. Both teams just wanted to get warm.......

 

 

 

I was at this game as well & I believe it was in the '77 playoffs. I've said before that this game, along w/ the X-T '97 state final are the two coldest games I've ever attended. The wind in both games was brutal but there was actually a little snow during the T-BD game...

I can't remember the year. It was a long time ago. Late 70's maybe. There was a play-off game at Somerset. Blizzard conditions. Below zero wind chill. The wind would blow anything off you if you tried to cover. You could hardly see the players on the field. I think they might have been playing M'boro. Whomever they were playing had a quarterback that would do flips out of the huddle. It could have been early 80's and M'boro might not have been the opponent. I can remember having ice frozen in my hair, eyebrows, and on my clothes. I've always loved football but I must have been young and stupid then. I'm old and stupid now.

I actually have another one. My sophomore year 2nd round playoff game at Belfry. The field (or mud) was rolled to make a field. I had honestly never seen anything like it in my life.

2002 Class 2A Mason @ Russell, at Putnam because Russell's field was submerged. Russell won 11-8 in the slop. As soon as we got out of the car, my daughter stepped in a mudhole, and my wife let her use her socks. Both had cold feet all night.

 

2003 Class 3A Mason @ Highlands. Coldest high school game I've ever attended; Highlands won 21-14. Had to park nearly a mile from the field.

 

2006 Johnson Central @ Mason County, with JC winning in a blowout. No yard markers, constant mistakes by the PA announcer who couldn't read uniform numbers after the first few minutes. Someone already said it, but the punt that stuck in the mud was pretty funny. I can't get a sand wedge to stop like that.

 

Hopefully this Friday won't measure up to some of the "mud bowls" cited in this thread.

That same night Boyle was at Paducah Tighlman. I was in town and went and did the game for Rebel Radio. It was one of the coldest nights, snow and wind was unbelieveable. Thank God for the press box or I would have died with the others that night. :lol:

 

Boyle beat Joe Casey and Hunter Cantwell 35-21.

I honestly cannot remember the year , I believe it was in the early 80's. Anyway it was when the Now Raceland Head Coach Randy Vanderhoof was standout Defensive End and Offensive lineman for the Rams and I think it was his senior year.

Was a 1st round playoff game at Bellevue. This was the year that Bellevue had big John Sutkamp. The weather was cold, had rained solid for a couple of days I believe. Was still raining solid that night the entire game and a cold, heavy downpour at that and that filed was deep, rolling mud. Sutkamp needless to say was one of the best backs in the State and a power runner.

Bellevue ran something like 63 total offensive plays and Sutkamp carried the ball 57 times :scared:........ for 375yds. I believe, that is close if not right. Raceland knew who was going to get the ball and where it was going - just couldn't stop it.

 

So, that one was not only one of if not the worst weather game that I have attended but was also THE MOST dominating performance by a any one payer in one game that I have seen anywhere.

 

Oldrambler, I remember that game as I attended that game with my dad as a kid (I was about 10 at the time) I remember being bundled up and staying to the very end. My family was and still is close friends with the Sutkamp family and I remember seeing the picture in the Post the next morning of all 3 Sutkamp brothers with their father (Bellevues team Doc) after the game and all you can see is teeth and the whites of their eyes in the picture. The original proof of the picture hung in their basement for years and was quite the conversation starter. :thumb:

1996 Class A Championship Game - Beechwood vs. Harrodsburg:

 

Played at the Old Cardinal Stadium in a snowstorm with flakes the size of Ritz Crackers and a VERY cold north wind howling in the open end. Beechwood KO'ed Craig Yeast on the opening kickoff, and won 21-14.

 

 

Craig Yeast didn't play on that Harrodsburg team. He graduated in 95. He played for Harrodsburg in 94 when Murray beat them in the semis to play us in the finals. The game your talking about was 96. It was 21-14 but the game wasn't that cold. That was the game when Beechwood was trying to kick a field goal in overtime. There was a bad snap when Adam Wulfeck picked up the ball and ran it in. The cold game your talking about was 97 when Beechwood beat them 20-0. That has to be one of the coldest games I have ever been to. There wasn't any score at halftime when Beechwood scored all of their points in the second half.

Still cannot shake the debacle in the only "rain-soaked" field in NKY on that late October Friday back in 1975...yes, the night HHS' perfect season was shattered by Campbell County. I guess that's why their mascot represents a Middle Eastern icon...wait, that's it! They're "evil do-ers"!! Quick, someone tell George Bush so we can bomb them and stop the madness!! Oh, in the name of Steve Colbert someone do something!!!!

Murray whipped Ohio County last year in a cold, wet, and windy night. It was a complete mud bowl. Ohio fumled many times and Murray just played smash mouth football.

1997 Paul Dunbar traveled to Boone co for a playoff game it had been raining all day and continued throughout the night boy was it muddy. overtime Preston Herron (BC) scored a td and we made the extra point. then they scored and we stopped em on the 2 point conversion to take the win at 7-6!

 

and then the other two i remember are the mud bowls Boone co at dixie in 05 and 06 boy do i miss that field!

Ludlow vs. Dayton 2001

 

I know this was the worst weather game I ever played in. It was my schools homecoming (Ludlow) and we were playing Dayton. It was channel 5's Blitz game of the week. Neither team was having a good season at all. It was pouring all day long, and never stopped during the game either. whole middle of the field was mud with standing water on it. I was the tailback on that team, and it was pretty much impossible to do much. The Dayton defense overpursued every single play, yet was not able to cut back at all because of how slick the field was. So every time I tried to cut back I would just slip and fall. I believe we had 9 turnovers that game on our side of the ball, and I think Dayton had 5 of their own. It was just a very ugly game to play in. Dayton ended up winning the game 18 to 0 I believe. They scored two 40 yard touchdowns, on the same play and both times our whole defense got sucked inside on a fake handoff, and then the second guy threw would get the ball and bounce it outside and score...That game was just a miserable game all away around...

I remember a game in the 1988 AAA Playoffs. It had rained all week and Saturday it was Highlands at Covington Cathoic. We showed up at school at about 7:30 that morning and began putting sawdust into all the areas where there was standing water and an excess of mud (which if you remember CCH prior to the turf, was just about everywhere.) We kicked off on time at 1pm and beat Highlands 33-8 to advance in the playoffs.

NewCath at Pikeville a couple years ago. We had lightning delays and didn't get home until 3AM. It was a nice road trip though.
