Floating Footballs is a new one for me. Never seen that.....

Corbin vs. Taylor County @ Taylor County in 2002 was ridiculous. Thankfully nobody was hurt but there is no way on Earth that game should have been played. There was literally 6 of 7 inches of pure mud for that game. By the end of the game, you couldn't tell the difference between what teams were playing.

 

 

You beat me to it. We had to be hosed off before we could go to the locker room. I was finding mud in places it shouldn't be for weeks and weeks after word. All though it was dangerous it was fun. You couldn't tell which team was which. Our white jerseys had a brown tint for the remainder of the year.

Birds were #1 in state , at home and the Colonels beat Lorenzen in OT !

What a game. Has to be #1.

My favorite was in 2002 when Bell beat Ashland, at Ashland. Ashland led most of the game. It was so muddy you couldn't see anyone's jersey. It was an incredibly entertaining game IMO!

I've covered a few games in torrential downpours. Yet so far nothing has topped the Frankfort High/Paris High game I covered at Paris in 2006. It wasn't a downpour by any means, just a constant, never-ending light rain. There was no room in the pressbox, so I had to roam the sidelines. I was soaked to the bone that night and cold as all get out, even though that game was played in early September.

Last season's Boyle vs. Russell County game was a site to see. My kids had more grass in thier Easter baskets than what was on that field after the game. I'm sure that the baseball coach was happy! I think that the Boyle players had to hose themselves off before being allowed back on the bus.

That 3 week stretch leading up to the 2002 regional championships was brutal on lots of fields. Many muddy games that week and that was the night Breathitt Co came to Belfry and played in a mud bowl. Belfry's field had been destroyed the week before in the rain and mud and they didn't cover it that week hoping it would dry out some. But more rains fell and sealed the deal and that field was a quagmire.

 

Breathitt led 7-0 with less than 2 min to go and Belfry had to start *gasp* passing the ball. :eek: On two consecutive series, they had a pass intercepted and ran back for a TD, making the final margin 21-0.

 

That Breathitt team was very very good and they went on the following week to beat Corbin by 50+ in the Championship game.

The 2003 AA semifinals at Lloyd was played in a cold, blistering snowstorm. It snowed sideways much of the game and my feet have never been the same. What a brutal night to be out watching football.

I remember playing at Trimble County one year....Rain, snow, sleet, wind.... 6" of water standing on the field, and yes, floating footballs....That was by far the worst weather I've ever played in.

Two that stand out to me was a Regional Championship game at Vipperman Stadium between Belfry and Breahitt Co. Not sure on the exact year but the field conditions were amazing. Somehow Breahitt still managed to win the game even though the were a pass heavy team

 

The second game was last year between JC and Mason Co. at Mason Co. Mud was literally ankle deep. I remember once when JC punted that the ball hit the mud and just stuck. No bounce, no roll, just stuck.

In 1965 Trinity entertained Chicago Mount Carmel at the old Trinity Stadium, which had a footprint virtually the same as the current stadium. The drainage in St. Matthews in those days was not good, to say the least, and water backed up on Sherrin Avenue due to heavy rains, so much so that the east end of the field was pretty much under about 6 inches of water from about the 40 yard line in. The refs, as one team would approach the red (Sea) zone, would have the teams "reverse field" and the offense would go the other way. I think that Mt. Carmel sloshed its way to a 13-7 win over the Coach Paul Gering-led Shamrocks.

2002 Breathitt @ Belfry (Regional Finals). I have never seen that thick of mud on a field in ym life, surprisingly Belfry had the ball with a chance to tie or win the game before those previously mentioned interceptions.

 

2003 Belfry @ Lloyd (State Semi's). I remmber Belfry fans huddling togetehr and giving up the blankets they were sitting on to put on the back of the bleachers to block the snow/wind. Those metal bleachers became a deathtrap of ice, and the field was literally frozen in place. My fondest memory of that agme was gametime and John Dunnhoft inviting all Belfry BGP'ers to the hospitality room where the best white chilli I have ever ate gave me a temporary warmup. That was one of those games that afterwards when I went to the hotel it was actually PAINFUL once my body started to warm up, sort of like when you go to the dentist and the novicaine starts to wear off and it burns.

 

I am sure some remember the infamous Belfry/Danville game (I was too young).

Also, I always heard about the Belfry/CovCath Semifinal that was as cold as the Lloyd game.

The Belfry/Danville game if 86 didn't involve bad weather on game day.

 

And the other one was Belfry/Highlands in 1989. Great game, coldest I have ever been at a game.

Bell vs Knox Central in 05. The game was actually stopped in the 2nd qaurter and alot of people had to go into bell's gym. The monsoon let up a bit and the game eventually got to be finished.
