I remember a game in the 1988 AAA Playoffs. It had rained all week and Saturday it was Highlands at Covington Cathoic. We showed up at school at about 7:30 that morning and began putting sawdust into all the areas where there was standing water and an excess of mud (which if you remember CCH prior to the turf, was just about everywhere.) We kicked off on time at 1pm and beat Highlands 33-8 to advance in the playoffs.

 

Seems like Highlands vs Covcath games were always played in the mud. 92 and 95 along with the 97 playoff games were bad weather games.

1987 Beechwood vs Pikeville in the state semis at Beechwood. Pikeville won the game 52-28. I know I had long johns and jeans on and I was still cold. I had no clue what the wind chill was that night but it was very bad. That was the year Pikeville started their first of their 3 straight class a titles.

That same night Boyle was at Paducah Tighlman. I was in town and went and did the game for Rebel Radio. It was one of the coldest nights, snow and wind was unbelieveable. Thank God for the press box or I would have died with the others that night. :lol:

 

Boyle beat Joe Casey and Hunter Cantwell 35-21.

 

I was down the road that night watching the Danville/Mayfield game. One of the coldest nights of football I can remember.

In 1984 Breathitt went to Knott Co. It had rained all week and came down hard during the game. Breathitt was down 14-0 at half time. We came out in the second half won 28-14. After the game, me and another player started running out of the end zone and dove into the mud. It seemed like we slid for 40 yards. After we did it Coach Holcomb took off running and did the same thing. But it was still raining so hard that by the time we walked from the field to the locker room the rain had washed the mud off. I know it wasn't a playoff game but it our mud bowl.

Two games in my short history in Kentucky:

 

2002 - Oldham Co. @ Eastern -- The year Joe Prince was coaching and Myron Pryor was playing offensive tackle. The field was already wet, but during the game, we had rain flying sideways. We had to delay to game due to a tornado warning. Then we finished the game on a field that was mud ankle deep. Eastern won on a fumble that they converted into a touchdown. This game was the highlight of a very rainy football season.

 

2006 - Metcalfe Co. @ McLean Co. -- The wind was blowing between 25 - 30 mph the whole night and it rained all day and all game. McLean wins on a block punt that was converted into a touchdown and a kicked point after that was the difference in a 7-6 win over then #9 Metcalfe Co. Unfortunately the next week, McLean didn't show up to play and got beat at Metcalfe on a very cold night 40-6 in the first round of the playoffs.

I remember one year when Breathitt went to Powell county and played. Ive been told by numerious people that Powell had used a fire hose to wet the feild. It had been raining, but when we got there it was mud up to ones ankle. Breathitt won the game of course. But it was something that I will remember for the rest of my life.
