Grady Moore was the QB and the game came down to a 4th down stop in OT.

LC played Beechwood in '03 in the state semis and it seemed like it was bellow 0 there. A wind was blowing in and it snowed. Our kids had never played on artificial turf and thought the dirty ice on their cleats was part of the artificial turf tearing up. But, boy, was it ever cold up there!!!!

Last year our Brossart JVs went to Eminence to play a late October Thursday night game. The weatherman in NoKy was calling for showers and mid-fifties.

 

When we passed the bank in Eminence it was pouring down and the temperature read 44. Since we had traveled all the way to Henry County for the game, it was played.

 

The rain blew sideways all night with no letup and the temperatures dropped into the upper thirties. There was no where to get out of it - I was soaked all of the way to my money and "thoroughly enjoyed" the ride back to NoKy drenced and frozen.

 

It was the worse outdoors condition that I've ever been subjected to and that includes two years in the army and many, many, Canadian fishing trips.

 

Oh yea!!! To make things worse, we got clobbered.

Bell vs Knox Central in 05. The game was actually stopped in the 2nd qaurter and alot of people had to go into bell's gym. The monsoon let up a bit and the game eventually got to be finished.

Last year, the final game of the regular season. Somerset vs Harlan, it rained the whole week prior to the game and eventually we had to tarp the field. That didn't help so when gametime rolled around it was extremely muddy and soaked. That wasn't the worst though. We had 4 straight home playoff games on that field and in the end it was just a muddy field with patches of grass.

Your correct about the stop in OT. I was at that game also, I don't remember it being cold oddly enough, I just remember it was Ken Shields Jr. that scored the game winning TD for the Birds. A year later I became friends with "Tank" Phillips from Belfry @ EKU. Nice guy. We talked about that game often.

Birds were #1 in state , at home and the Colonels beat Lorenzen in OT !

What a game. Has to be #1.

Don't forget that CCH came back from 21 down in the first half.

Southwestern at Pulaski in 1999. That field was pretty muddy. Actually it was really muddy considering that it hadn't rained in the area for two weeks prior to the game. I think their sprinkler system was accidently left on for two days leading up to the game.:eek:

A torrential rain poured down upon us the ENTIRE game tonight. I had a rain poncho AND an umbrella and still was soaked by the end of the game. There was water standing in various places on the field and fumbles galore by both teams. The game was delayed at one point as animals of all species came from out of nowhere marching in pairs across the field toward some unseen destination.

 

Unfortunately, King Middle prevailed 14-6.

1996 Class A Championship Game - Beechwood vs. Harrodsburg:

 

Played at the Old Cardinal Stadium in a snowstorm with flakes the size of Ritz Crackers and a VERY cold north wind howling in the open end. Beechwood KO'ed Craig Yeast on the opening kickoff, and won 21-14.

 

Honorable mention to the Doss/Southern regular season game in 1992:

 

Heavy T-Storm with torrential rain delayed the start about 30 minutes. The lightning stopped, but the rain continued. The field had the consistancy of chocolate pudding between the 20's and the hash marks.

 

The creek behind the stadium overflowed and flooded the practice field and parking lot. The police helicopter hovered behind the home stands for a while. Later found out they were looking for a reported child swept away by the high water.

 

Coming out for the 2nd half the PRP fire chief was wading through the parking lot carrying one of the "Big Bruiser" sled dummies (that got left out). Seems someone saw it floating down the creek and reported it as a child in the water.

 

As for the game, Doss scored 3 times in the final 5 minutes to win 21-0.

I honestly cannot remember the year , I believe it was in the early 80's. Anyway it was when the Now Raceland Head Coach Randy Vanderhoof was standout Defensive End and Offensive lineman for the Rams and I think it was his senior year.

Was a 1st round playoff game at Bellevue. This was the year that Bellevue had big John Sutkamp. The weather was cold, had rained solid for a couple of days I believe. Was still raining solid that night the entire game and a cold, heavy downpour at that and that filed was deep, rolling mud. Sutkamp needless to say was one of the best backs in the State and a power runner.

Bellevue ran something like 63 total offensive plays and Sutkamp carried the ball 57 times :scared:........ for 375yds. I believe, that is close if not right. Raceland knew who was going to get the ball and where it was going - just couldn't stop it.

 

So, that one was not only one of if not the worst weather game that I have attended but was also THE MOST dominating performance by a any one payer in one game that I have seen anywhere.

Your right Oldrambler and Bellvue ran the single wing where the center snapped the ball to who was going to run and the QB was more like a blocking back

That 3 week stretch leading up to the 2002 regional championships was brutal on lots of fields. Many muddy games that week and that was the night Breathitt Co came to Belfry and played in a mud bowl. Belfry's field had been destroyed the week before in the rain and mud and they didn't cover it that week hoping it would dry out some. But more rains fell and sealed the deal and that field was a quagmire.

 

Breathitt led 7-0 with less than 2 min to go and Belfry had to start *gasp* passing the ball. :eek: On two consecutive series, they had a pass intercepted and ran back for a TD, making the final margin 21-0.

 

That Breathitt team was very very good and they went on the following week to beat Corbin by 50+ in the Championship game.

 

Actually the following week Breathitt beat Russell 28-27 in OT in the state semifinals. A missed extra point was the difference. Then they won the Championship game the following week by 50 some points.

 

That was without a doubt the worst stretch of weather for the playoffs. The Russell/Carroll Co game has already been mentioned. Russell's field was so torn up they used Putnam Stadium to host Mason County, led by Grutza and Lofton, in the Regional final. They won 12-8. That was the week following the Bell Co/Ashland game that was mentioned earlier as well in post #19. So you can imagine the shape that the field was in then.
