Scribe's Week Eight Football Notebook

(information gathered from various media sources, coaches, and BGP members)

As we get later and later in the season, the Notebook appears later and later in the week. The two aren’t related, but are coincidental in nature.

The district races are shaping up, and this week’s games will determine the final seeding for the playoffs.

Let’s take a look back at last week:

· Congratulations to Bell County head coach Dudley Hilton, who became the second coach to win 300 football games in Kentucky. Hilton has a career record of 300-97, with 210 of his wins coming on Log Mountain. The Bobcats beat Sheldon Clark 31-6 Friday for the milestone win. Junior Spencer Greer rushed for 133 yards on 21 carries and scored once. The Bell defense held Adam Dials, the state’s leading rusher, to 129 yards on 24 carries – 110 yards below his average.

· Sheldon Clark has a chance to again become part of a 300-win celebration, this time at the hands of Phillip Haywood and Belfry. Haywood picked up his 299th career win last week when the Pirates beat Pike County Central 56-25.

· Josh Conner rushed for 141 yards to lead Highlands past Lexington Catholic 32-9 in a battle of top-ranked teams. · Justin Green rushed for 145 yards and four touchdowns to lead Male past Butler 56-15. Green needs three yards for 1,000 on the season and has already scored 20 touchdowns on the ground this year.

· Shawn Grimm rushed for 187 yards and three scores to lead Johnson Central over Central 48-29 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final shows. Terrel Holstein had 131 receiving yards and two touchdowns for Central.

· Sophomore Vashun Banks rushed for 228 yards on just 13 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead Christian County past Trigg County 49-28. Banks scored on runs of 12, 38, 56, 71, and 25 yards as the Colonels ran up 394 rushing yards. Trigg County suffered their first loss of the season, and Wildcat quarterback Donald Bush threw his first interception of the season, ending a streak of 142 consecutive passes without a pick.

· Breathitt County opened the “Fugates” against Lexington Christian in their 46-28 win Friday. Senior quarterback Colby Fugate completed 17-of-25 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Channing Fugate rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Robinson has completed 75-percent of his passes (163-of-216) for 2,388 yards and 44 touchdowns in seven games. Jamarielle Brown caught four passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Reidland dressed only 16 players for various reasons.

· Henry Clay ran past Bryan Station 35-7 as Dontey Gay ran for 142 yards on 11 carries and scored three times. Quarterback Ryan Phillipi completed 12-of-17 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown and added 73 rushing yards and a score as the Devils improved to 6-1.

· Will Stein and Tim Phillips provided a nice one-two punch for Trinity in their 56-20 dismantling of Pleasure Ridge Park. · Simon Kenton’s Bryan King kicked a 31-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to help the Pioneers beat Russell 42-41 and end the state’s longest home field winning streak at 34 games. Russell led by 16 points at halftime and was ahead 38-25 heading into the fourth quarter before Simon Kenton began their comeback. Touchdowns by Nate Ponzer and Josh Salyer gave the Pioneers a 39-38 lead. Jason Dolly kicked a 30-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to seemingly give Russell the win. But a short kick, a pass, and a penalty set up the final game-winning kick for the Pioneers. Ponzer had 10 catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

· Alex Matthews completed 29-of-42 passes for 455 yards and six touchdowns to lead Shelby County to a 55-37 shootout win over Eastern. Matthews has thrown for 2,452 yards and 27 touchdowns in seven games this year.

· Joe Roskopf ran for 260 yards and four touchdowns to help Lynn Camp beat Whitley County 35-6.

· Beechwood’s Neico Teipel has trouble with people pronouncing his name correctly and defenders have trouble stopping him. In two weeks, Teipel has stepped in to replace the injured Tommy Bankemper and has rushed for over 400 yards the past two weeks.

· Mercer County’s Jordan Yeast ran for 115 yards to lead the Titans to a 34-17 win over Boyle County to even their record at 4-4.

Sophomore Joey Meehan caught seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. Olinger has thrown for 1,914 yards and 23 touchdowns against just one interception on the year. He’s also rushed for 619 yards and 11 scores.

· Middlesboro picked up the school’s 600th career win in their 34-6 win over Cawood. Brennan Bowling rushed for 107 yards, and Hunter Adams added 74 for the Yellowjackets, who became just the eighth school in the state to amass 600 career wins. Middlesboro is 600-276-29 since beginning play in 1921. Incredibly, Somerset reached the milestone last week, Hopkinsville can reach it Friday night at Owensboro, and Manual and Ashland both stand at 598 career wins.

· Boone County’s Cory Farris rushed for 330 yards on four carries and scored twice to lead the Rebels past Dixie Heights 43-27 in Thursday night football.

· Harrison County’s Julius Talbott ran for 82 yards, threw for 85 yards and a TD, and returned a fumble 42 yards to lead his team past Rockcastle County 34-22.

· Bret Denton of Raceland rushed for 262 yards and four touchdowns in helping the Rams beat Paintsville 54-30.

Five games to keep an eye on this week:

· Fort Campbell at Owensboro Catholic – After meeting deep in the playoffs in seasons’ past, the Falcons and Aces are meeting to determine the top two seed in the district. Fort Campbell’s coaches should have seen plenty last week. The Falcons were off, while the Aces beat Warren East 28-14.

· Russell at Mason County – Russell saw their 34-game losing streak end last week in bizarre fashion. They too are playing for the top seed in the district.

· Pulaski County at Lincoln County – Pulaski County is 7-0, and Lincoln County is 6-1 after losing to Bell County in the season opener. The Maroons average 42 points a game on offense, while the Patriot defense gives up just 15 points a game.

· Fulton City at Mayfield – Unbeaten Fulton City has circled this game on their calendar for a year. The Bulldogs are hoping to knock off the district and region king on their home field. And they may be catching them at a good time with Mayfield minus their quarterback and center. However, a scheduling quirk has seen Fulton City play just once in three weeks.

· Marion County vs. North Bullitt – Marion County hasn’t won eight games in a season in 12 years. They enter Friday’s game at North Bullitt at 7-0. A win by North Bullitt could cause a three-way tie atop the district, but Marion County is well ahead in the tie-breaker for first place.

Kentucky vs. The World

Here are the records of Kentucky schools against the border states through the first five weeks of the season:

· Illinois 2-1 (.666)

· Indiana 6-5 (.545)

· Tennessee 7-8 (.466)

· Ohio 5-7 (.416)

· Virginia 1-6 (.142)

· West Virginia 0-1 (.000)

· Florida 0-1 (.000)

Streak of the Week

· With Russell’s 34-game home field winning streak over, Bowling Green now has the longest such streak at 17 games, last losing in the 2004 playoffs to Madisonville. Sheldon Clark saw their 13-game home winning streak snapped last week to Bell County, and Owensboro Catholic snapped Warren East’s 12-game home winning streak. No one else in the state has a double-digit home game-winning streak after five teams came into the season with 10 or more consecutive home wins.
