If Whitley keeps all their young talent from going elsewhere, the Colonels could have a very solid club over the next couple years. This should be a pretty attractive job, politics aside.

Politics are always a part of the equation at Whitley............but you are right in the fact that they should have a pretty good team over the next several years.

Clyde Hill, G.B. Hendrickson, Jerry Hodges, Donald Haynes, Bill Perkins, Glenn Croley, John Davenport, Jimmy Voight, Richard Prewitt, Mike Maxey, Dook Kent Combs, Brian Evans, Darrell Guffey and Mike Deaton have all tried their time as Colonel Head Basketball Coach since the mid 60's or so and have all grown tired of the position for various reasons.

Jimmy Voight was my favorite. I think he would have built a program if he had stayed. Its a shame Deaton is leaving before the job is done. Whiltley Co is a sleeping giant for the right coach. However, its going to take someone willing to WORK for 3 or 4 years to get it done.

I hope that this Colonel program gets a good coach in there for those kids. Wow!!!I feel sry for the kids there at WCHS. For some of those kids its the 3rd coach in 4 yrs. thats horrible. Who do you think Whitley should offer the job to?

Who do you think Whitley should offer the job to?

I know its a long shot, but I would at least put a phone call in to Champ Ligon. He has a lot of upside. He has the reputation for being an excellent physics and algabra teacher. His record at Bryan Station speeks for its self. Bryan Station's basketball program was in much worse shape than Whitley County's when Champ arrived. The only reason I think Whitley Co may have a shot, and its a long shot, is that Bryan Station waited till up in June to fire him, when most all the head coaching vacancies were filled.

The second call would go to Whitaker. I think Whitaker was a much better coach than the Bell Co people give him credit for.

I would offer it to one of the assistants. Either Siler or Baker would make a good coach and might be able to continue what Coach Deaton had started building. Not sure if they would be interested at all, but this is who I would start with if I were calling the shots. What do you think Ace?

Whitaker I could see being interested. It would be hard for his son to take over the point from Lebanion and Prewitt out at Whitley, if you know what I mean.

Ligon would be like a fish out of water at Whitley. He might not be the best fit. I think he would fit in better at an urban school with the style of ball he likes to play.

You don't think a hard pressing, man to man, fast breaking, full bore, "balls to the wall" style would fit in southeastern Kentucky? Don't get me wrong. I don't think Ligon would come to Whitley County. However, IF he did and IF he stayed for three years WCHS would be a regional contender.

It might work if he could bring the athletes he had at Station,Male or Shelby County with him.

I don't know. I have seen that similar style work well at other SE KY schools that are smaller than WCHS. I think the style Champ coaches actually develops the talent you have much better than the slower paced, zone defense, half court, types. Kids also enjoy it more and will play harder. It also will get more kids playing time.

I didn't mean for this to get into a debate about coaching styles.

I think they should go after Whitaker hard because there is one thing you cant deny about Whitaker and that is he is an established winner.

Well Bubba IDK about the assistant coaches..Siler is awfully young and Baker, I just dont know if he is ready to take over the Colonel program. Both of them seem like great coaches but this program may still need a little more work then what these to can offer. I think if Whitley County was smart they would try to go for Whitaker or maybe even one of the two Vernon boys from Cumberland College.

At this point I think the Colonel program just needs a coach who will stick with it through thick and thin. That would be the best thing that could happen for this Colonel program. Sometimes I think that "Chemistry" has just as much or more meaning to a team then skill or athletes.

Good Luck Whitley County in finding a great coach...
