Any job openings in the 13th Region? I heard Whitley County may be looking for a new Boys Basketball coach. Anybody know anything?

I heard Coach Deaton was shopping over in Somerest and has decided to stay put for now...

Well, you never know out at Whitley. It seems coaches come and go like the seasons. Deaton said in the paper last week he was the coach so we will take the coach at his word. For whatever that is worth.

I also heard Deaton was gone.....and they have a hometown boy that their looking at to replace him.

My how things change, I am hearing now that Whitley and Deaton may have parted ways LOL...

Interesting. If Coach Deaton decides to leave, I can not imagine Whitley finding a better game coach to replace him. Now a hometown boy might make the parents happier,lol.

Whitley County has so much potential to be a fine basketball program. They have a fine school, great talent, nice facilities, and very good fan support. If the Administration and parents would actually keep their dang noses out of things and let a coach do an actual job, maybe they could have some success. Mike Deaton was and as far as I know, is the best thing to happen to Whitleys program and here they are bickering about him. I can think of two coaches Whitley has had that could have had them turn the corner. Rich Prewitt and Coach Deaton. The other 374 coaches that come and go, had ability but didn't seem to have the killer instinct to build a program in my mind.

Interesting name from the past. Do you think Roger would put the time in needed to restore the team to a competitive status? He was an assistant at Whitley and WBurg back in the 80's and did not seem to be too interested in working the summer scene or coaching at that time. He is no doubt one of the best players of all time at Whitley County, but it might be a stretch to get him off the water and woods to come into the gym.

 

All this talk maybe premature until something offical is announced. I can not see Coach Deaton walking away from all the fringe benefits.

When I heard the rumor I also questioned it, but was told that he is indeed very interested in the Whitley program and it's future.

 

I agree with some others on this thread...Parents need to stay out of it and let a coach get in there and build a program. Being a parent I know it's hard, but sometimes biting your tongue and walking away is by far the best thing for your child and the team.

I don't think this is how parents were treating Deaton. I think it has to do with how Deaton was treating the players, parents, and the school system.

Whitley needs a hard nosed coach like Deaton. That's why the program hasn't advanced. A good coach demands discipline and Whitley's kids just can't handle that, because parents have always intervened. The parents are worse than the kids. Once you get to the high school level, you gotta put in the effort to get to play. Practice only makes you better. Traveling and playing other teams not from around here can only improve a team. I hope the new coach (if there is one) looks at it the same way. It wouldn't be fair to the kids who have worked so hard to this point.

 

Do you think S. Laurel and Corbin players sit on their during the summer months. Their practicing and playing teams better than them so they can get better at playing local teams. Duh!

 

I for one hope Deaton stays. Whitley can only improve. It would be nice to have a team playing in the regionals in 2011, not just hosting them.

 

At the rate Whitley is going, they'll have 4 more coaches before then. You can't please everybody.

Clyde Hill, G.B. Hendrickson, Jerry Hodges, Donald Haynes, Bill Perkins, Glenn Croley, John Davenport, Jimmy Voight, Richard Prewitt, Mike Maxey, Dook Kent Combs, Brian Evans, Darrell Guffey and Mike Deaton have all tried their time as Colonel Head Basketball Coach since the mid 60's or so and have all grown tired of the position for various reasons. Looking at the past trend it does not seem to be a job that lasts for more than a year or two at best. Whitley will be hard pressed to find a coach better than most on this list. Many of these guys have went on to win at other schools, some at the college level even.
