It actually is very strange. It is one thing when a school hires a coach, but they teach elsewhere and never teach at that school or not even a teacher at all. Which you are correct that does happen. What is happening here is strange, since he was teaching in the building and coaching there. As you don’t see coaches then stop teaching at the school they are coaching at, so that part definitely is strange to see.

It is definitely strange in that regard. I suppose Kings would pay more, and he was already an Ohio teacher, BUT, if I am Beechwood I am VERY concerned about loyalty and ties. Beechwood is far too elite of a program for this kind of drama.

Roughly a $20k pay difference from Kings (where he is rumored to have a job) to Beechwood. That's not nothing. But definitely a unique circumstance.

Driving 30+ minutes away from home mid afternoon to coach football for a small stipend before driving 30+ minutes back home is not an ideal situation. Without knowing anything, this sounds odd and would not be surprised if there is more to it than just more money. It will not be surprising if Beechwood has a new had coach in the fall. The optics of this do not make much sense.

I don’t feel like there is any drama and I understand the personal decision he made.  With that said I also feel like this might be his last year with BW.  He is an Ohio guy and he is losing some incredible talent after this season.  I think he might move on after this season.  BW is never really down but they could take a small step back leading into 27/28 season.  Seems like the writing is on the wall to me.

I believe this was a stepping stone job for Volker and he never intended to be there long term. I understand taking more money to help your family, but he wants to stay this year because Beechwood is loaded and this will help his resume for an Ohio job. Beechwood should part ways with him immediately and move on. You can't be half in when you are the Head Coach at a program like Beechwood

I wonder if the Beechwood powers that be have reached out to Coach Rash about coming back, at least for one year like he did at Conner.

Guru, I would certainly hope so. He would be the best person they could find at this late date and the community loves him.

As an outsider, I'm surprised that Beechwood is allowing an arrangement like this but I'm not as familiar with their past and how common that is.  It's also interesting how there is intrigue surrounding Beechwood and Mayfield this offseason as we head into another very competitive 2A season.

Isn’t this time of year a hard time to hire a coach?   Just seems late in the cycle, which would worry me about getting the best applicant pool possible.

I don’t love this idea.  Volker has a lot to gain from a successful season, in my opinion.  I would have about the same level of concern with Coach Rash coming on as interim and how ‘committed’ he would be vs the current situation.

Tough scrimmage for sure and especially coming off their first scrimmage against Ryle.  It tells me one of two things, either Beechwood is going to be really good and the powers that be want to challenge the Tigers or the powers that be like the "Ohio Limelight" a little too much.

I am a little conflicted here.  On one hand I agree with you that Beechwood should let Volker coach the 2026 season (I assume that was all agreed upon behind closed doors) but on the other hand my initial thoughts about the schedule being something other than "in the best interests of the Beechwood football program" are more intense now.

I got news for ya. If Coach Rash were to come back, you don’t have to worry about him being “committed”.

Beechwood fans are harsh already replacing a coach that hasn't even left. Good luck this season!

Looks to me like he has a foot out the door!

Jay Volker is an Elder guy. I have a decent handful of contacts in Cincinnati coaching circles and several have told me that Volker has been consistent during the last two off-seasons with asking around concerning what jobs are likely to come open across the river in Cincinnati. General consensus is that he wants the job at Elder once Doug Ramsey retires. Ramsey is in his late 50s, so after 29 seasons at Elder he could potentially be looking at retiring any time, and at the same time he could also be hoping for another decade with the Panthers. But from what I've been hearing Volker is trying to weigh whether or not his college coaching career plus a short but highly successful head coaching career at Beechwood is enough to get him the job at Elder (whenever that comes available), or if he needs to build his resume further with an Ohio job before he would be a viable candidate at Elder.

Personally I really like Volker at Beechwood. I think he's obviously doing a great job, and I support any coach who improves the status of football programs in Kentucky and especially in northern Kentucky. That said, I kinda feel like we may see him make the move back to his homeland in Cincinnati sooner rather than later, but that's just conjecture at this point.
