A game between both would be so good and interesting, just like when both schools play Cov Cath year in and year out. We could tab the game, "The Battle of the Forts."

According to my memory, Highlands and Beechwood have only played twice this century. 09-10 and 10-11, both games were blowouts. Most years during the Mueller era, I don't think BW would've had much of a chance.

Fun fact about that 09 game, UK coach ( I think it was Joker Phillips) was at that game to recruit Austin Collinsworth. Joker arrived to the game in style, by arriving in a helicopter and landing it on the Beechwood Baseball field.

The 1974 State Runners-Up Tigers:

The 74 Tigers, led by Coach Fred Mariani, were the first team to ever make it to the big stage and play for a state championship. They were led by Class A, 1st team All State QB, Mike Murray, who also handled all of the PK and led all of NKY in PTs scored with 110. He had well over 1000 total yards of offense, with the majority of them coming on the ground. Other standouts were FB Steve Keith and RBs Joe Miller and Billy Marshall. The 3 of them combined for over 30 TDs. Up front the Tigers were led by 1st team Class A All State OG, Brad Hood, who also excelled at LB, and 2nd team Class A All Stater, Bill Ahlers.

Other standouts for the team were Kevin Murray, Mark Jannings, Mark Steffen, Chris Pappas and Rickie Hutchcraft.

8th grader Gary Nussbaum was called upon to kick off in the playoffs!

The Tigers went 11-3 overall and had an average margin of victory of 31-11. Even though they came up short in the finals 14-0 against Murray, that game was a 0-0 game very late in the 4th quarter, and it just slipped away from them. This team set a new standard of what was achievable, and built upon the success from the 1972 squad!

Call me crazy, but Beechwood could go undefeated this year. Indian Hill is an interesting matchup. Have the Tigers ever played them before?

The Cov Cath game is a toss up IMO. It is right down the road in Park Hills, but I think Beechwood has a decent chance to beat my Colonels. Rash coming back will have the gang firing on all cylanders against their rival.

Rash has had several teams in the past who have beat CCH. Volker never pulled it off in his short tenure at HC. Best of luck to the Tigers- except when they play my Colonels. 😉
