Open Job: Covington Holy Cross

I’ve known Nelson since he was 8 years old and been around him and his family since that  time. I’ve even been around him coaching AAU basketball for many years.

While he’s not been a coordinator, he does have a ton of football coaching experience at Scott as an assistant and a HC at the middle school level in basketball. People need to stop talking about him being too young for this and too young for that and discounting him not being a coordinator. He’s been around  enough coaching circles and gained valuable experience. Should he surround himself with some assistant coaches with deeper knowledge, absolutely as teams are only as good as their assistants.

I heard they same negative comments about the current Holy Cross boys basketball coach who was too young, too inexperienced, wasn’t a “real” assistant at the college level, so forth and so on, yet all Coach Johnson is doing is competing and winning and just took his team to the “All-A” 9th region final!

You can’t judge a coaches’ desire and passion by their age because that’s nothing but a number. Not saying he’s the person for the job or not, but he’s certainly worthy of strong consideration if in fact he’s interested.

Anything new on this opening?

My understanding is that the lack of a teaching position in the building is making this hire very difficult.

Coach Koz is staying on as a teacher, which does leave Holy Cross in the precocious position of having to hire a head football coach who will only be making the head coaching stipend plus whatever the boosters can kick in. I'm not sure that the boosters' boost is very large at Holy Cross. Adam Kozerski would have made a potential candidate for the job, as he could have stayed on at Brossart while coaching at Holy Cross, but it sounds like most Holy Cross folks (excepting Bruce, naturally) were not very enthused by the idea of that hire. And now that point is moot with him getting the Bishop Brossart job. Paul Wiggins would have made for an interesting choice if he was interested. He is a Newport Independent employee, and was already only making a coaching stipend at Brossart. Again, there is the unknown contribution amount of the boosters, so that dollar sign is unclear. I would have to think Holy Cross has reached out to Coach Wiggins. And with the amount of time that has passed since Wiggins was oustered at Bishop Brossart, my gut says that he must have turned the job down at Holy Cross if he was ever approached for it. He was fired for no apparent reason by one Holtz brother. Could you really blame him for not wanting to take a job working for the other Holtz brother?

This is tough sledding for Holy Cross right now.

This is definitely going to a young, young first time head coach now.

That’s not a bad thing.

Hard to say if it will be good or bad.  Hopefully HC gets lucky with their hire.

Actually Boosters are not allowed to pay salaries.  That is why many coaches have other “positions” within the school.  This is not an HC rule I believe it is a KHSAA rule.

Who is making the hire, ultimately, the Principal (Mike Holtz) or the AD (Anne Julian).  Or Koz?  Or Mr. Alinghaus?  Or someone else?  Who should be making it, I'm honestly asking.  Hiring a coach, to me, is ultimately part of the AD's job, so I'm assuming this falls to Anne...correct?  Although I have to believe Mike Holtz (and some / all of the others) will have a loud voice in the room.

High School AD's are often under-appreciated, but the good ones really make a big impact.  I'll leave it at that.

Age should never be a factor in promoting a qualified person or hiring a head coach. The person either has the emotional and intellectual maturity to be in a leadership role, or they do not. That should be the factor that is judged rather than an arbitrary age requirement.

I agree with you. If it is the right person, it is the right person.

What is something about this job that makes an older candidate, not a first time head coach, say “wow I can’t pass this up”?

HC does have a state championship and another appearance as a state semi finalist. They have a decent home field at Thomas More University and their own practice facility.  Once families become part of the HC environment, they usually love and remain very loyal to the program and school. Boosters are solid, although we could use more of them. The AD works very hard to help all the sports succeed. Personally, I think that being a Catholic school is a big plus. Those are some of the positives. Obviously, HC is no different in that there are opportunities for improvement.

Finally, if that doesn’t impress a coaching candidate, then maybe having the chance to work with me would! ?

You're top-notch, Pete.....genuinely, you're a definite benefit to their program.
