Mayfield 31 Beechwood 28

Featured Replies

On the ref calls, everyone looks through the lens of their own team. Sitting in the Beechwood stands, there were a lot of yells about calls that were made. It is the way it is. Fans want all the calls to go their way. I will be watching the game again today on Red Helmet Video and I will see what I can see on the calls. My guess is the refs were justified on every one of those calls.

Being a Beechwood fan, you will be surprised to hear me say this considering the Tigers record there, but War Memorial is one of my two favorite high school stadiums to watch a big game like that. The other one for me is Belfry.

Last night was such a fun atmosphere. The fans were into that game and very loud. The roar that happens on big plays is something else. Every person I talked with from Mayfield knew I was a Beechwood fan because of my Beechwood jacket and they were super gracious. The people in the end zone tailgate live it up and have a great time. So unique to have that tailgate area right there at the end zone. Mayfield fans know their football. I have nothing but good things to say about everything at War Memorial and the Mayfield fans.

I like a lot of your posts but I disagree strongly with this one. Here's why:

1. Do you think Beechwood wasn't capable of at least getting into field goal range in one minute? After all the big plays they had in the game? I watched this team all year. They can score in one play from anywhere on the field. Last week they had 3 TD's that were one play scores including a 53 yarder and a 71 yarder. If I went back and looked, I think I would find 20 times during the year that Beechwood scored a TD in 2 minutes or less including games against Dixie Heights, Simon Kenton and even the fantastic defense of Covington Catholic.

2. Do you change how you played all year with one minute to go in the biggest game of the year? Beechwood's offense was an aggressive attacking passing game all year. Beechwood practices their 2 minute drill over and over and over. They ended their practice on Thanksgiving running their 2 minute drill. So you tell your team forget about that practice we do all the time? That is demoralizing to your own team. They prepared for that moment and that situation all year and now you say let's lay down here and forget all that hard work. No way!

3. Read the game. If that game goes to overtime, who do you think has the advantage? I believe in my Tigers but if I am being objective based on how that game was going, Mayfield has the advantage. Beechwood had trouble stopping the run all night. I would not want the game riding on stopping Starks 4 times from 10 yards out. Beechwood had the momentum after that fumble. They had the opportunity to win in their hands. They had a QB that rarely makes mistakes. They trailed the entire game and this was their chance. That last drive was the only time all night that Mayfield thought they could lose the game because they know Beechwood's big strike passing attack could score any time.

No sir. No way in the world that was the wrong decision. Give Mayfield credit. They made the play. Put me in that situation again with this team and I am going for it again.

100% agree!  The way that game had gone, playing at a difficult venue with a chance to win, a huge momentum swing with the fumble, you absolutely go try to win it with the ball in your best player’s hands.  Give Mayfield credit for making the plays at the end but I like us going for the W there.

Catching up on the thread over coffee and I’m literally reading Mayfield fans complaining about refereeing?  Come on folks, don’t taint a good victory for you. It’s a bad light.

And can’t believe folks are second guessing the coaching but my two cents on the OT or going for it. Ya gotta go for it. On the road at Mayfield?  You got to. You just can’t throw an INT across the middle like that. Take the deep shots to the speedsters but can’t end on a play like that. Even if he hits an Beechie time then becomes a factor with how much real estate was left to go. INT aside Mayfield running game wins that in OT. Had to go for it.

great game. Another classic. Red Helmet video……. you killed it. THANK YOU. Bring the hardware back to Mayfield fellas……

This game will be remembered. Beechwood did the right thing, had the ball with about a minute to go, had the momentum , I would expect Mayfield to do the very same thing. Mayfield had a good first half, Beechwood played the second half great. Theres a reason why Beechwood has won 3 straight titles and one of them is they win the close ones and two they never think their out of it. All in all it was a great game to watch and the atmosphere was exceptionally good. Also, I want to say something about our kicker, I'm  glad he got to redeem himself, he's been a very good kicker for us .

Was great getting to see you again last night in the end zone! Hope we get to get together again next year!

Nothing wrong with pointing out the refs missed a big one.  The way that game went, it absolutely could've mattered.

This is the point! As close as this game was we could be having a completely different conversation today! And idc but IMO and a lot of other peoples they missed 3 BIG ONES. We had 3 TDs taken away. What major calls did Beechwood have that affected the game as a whole? This game shouldn’t have been close at the end and it was a nail biter. Too close for comfort. that's all I’m saying. I understand as a beechwood fan you wouldn’t see it the same way and I’m happy we won but good grief.

Just a few observations.

1. I thought LCA was a good team. I think Beechwood is better.

2. Beechwood is well coached and just fundamentally sound in every area.

3. The Tigers did not beat themselves. Mayfield won the game.

4. Mayfield needs to really celebrate the accomplishments of this team. We have beat not one, but two really good teams back to back.

5. Zane Cartwright is one of my favorite Mayfield quarterbacks.

6. It was really great getting to personally meet Voice of Reason last night. He has been a solid voice on this website for years. Glad he went home sad. ?

I respect your opinion. If there was closer to two minutes left I would have definitely been aggressive. Personally I would have been more conservative with 80 yards and less than a minute. Unfortunately Beechwood made the one mistake you couldn’t do. They went out swinging and made a great comeback. Hayden is an excellent QB.

I will say if I had Lance Harbor, I would have gone for the score late. With Johnny Moxon, not a chance.

Congrats Mayfield best of luck at State!

I have never been happier for a player than I was for that Kicker. The kid redeemed himself and helped Mayfield advance.  The score was close and it was a fantastic game, but Mayfield let it become that way.  One or two things different for BW and they win... One or two things different for Mayfield and its a blow out.  Mayfield needs to clean up some stuff and get ready to win another!

JuJu had a I love LCA cheerleaders tee shirt on last week?

The reason why the broadcaster “barks” is because he was in a group of fans called the dog pound that used to sit together at the games. Now ya know.

Have you watched the video yet to make sure there wasn't holding? I know on the one the Beechwood fans were yelling holding before Starks even got 5 yards downfield - it was that obvious to them.

It may be the reason those were TD's is because there was holding. If there wasn't holding, the defender gets to Starks and he probably doesn't score. That is usually the way it is on these TD's that get called back by penalty. People talk about TD's getting called back because of a penalty but it is that very penalty that made the TD happen.

I haven't watched the video to know for sure if there was or wasn't holding, but those flags were thrown before Starks scored. It's not like they waited to see if he was going to score and then threw a flag.

Ditto. Beechwood will be back! Beechwood loses 4 starters. All the leading skill players are back. The freshman team has talent and size. The Tigers are loaded for next year.
