What penalty should teams that withdraw from the playoffs receive?

Featured Replies

You know, we have this silly six class system in our tiny state and four teams from each district getting in the playoffs and inevitably you have teams drop out of the playoffs because so many of the teams are pathetic.  What penalty should teams that drop out face?  I think anyone that drops out of the playoffs should automatically be out of the playoffs for the next year and maybe the next two years.

Or we could get rid of our stupid playoff system that puts far, far too many teams in the playoffs.

Anyone?

I don't favor sanctioning any team for withdrawing as there can be a multitude of reasons why teams would opt not to do it whether because of injuries, cost, etc.  I'm not a fan of letting everyone in

None but if someone doesn't make the playoffs they are aloud to take their spot.

  • None.

I understand teams dropping from the playoffs. It's unfortunate, but it happens. I see no reason to "punish" them. We need just four classes as few teams as we have in Kentucky. Personally I like just the top two in each district moving forward. That will never happen. If I ever bump into you Guru I can tell you a very interesting story about how that four team deal came into play when we had four classes.

As said there are a lot of reasons to cancel.  The cancellations tend to be the teams that will be completely overwhelmed by their opponent essentially giving the number one seed a bye.  It's the same as the propositions to only having three teams with 2v3 round one with the first seed a bye.

I wish it was top 2 teams in each district.  I'm sure they let 4 in for money purposes, but it creates a watered down product.  And ultimately, football is always discussing how to be safer.  Go to two teams, and there are less amount of games and risk of injuries.

Football already plays less games than other sports. Players work all off season, practice all the time to only play a minimum of ten games. The amount of games is not a problem. Plus as people mentioned, no one seems to have a problem with baseball and basketball where everyone makes the playoffs, because the district tournament is the start of the playoffs for those sports.

So I think going down to 2 teams per district just isn’t enough at all. I could maybe buy going down to 3 teams per district making it. However, the same argument applies that I just mentioned above.

I think there should be a time frame where there is no punishment. However I heard that Trimble County was still debating on playing or not as of yesterday. Regardless of if that is true or not, if a team is preparing to play their game and then you bow out of the playoffs then I wouldn't necessarily be against a punishment. Depending on how severe of course

Edit- just seeing the thread that Trimble did in fact withdraw.

For the record, I think basketball should play less games too.  30 is too many.  25 is more idea.  I would be okay with 3 teams making it.  These 1-4 beatings that are coming this Friday are hard to see.

Not a fan of zero tolerance in schools, and a blanket punishment for cancelling sounds like zero tolerance to me.  It's difficult for small schools to get enough players.  Forcing them to miss playoffs would hurt their numbers even more.

Absolutely none.

Most of the teams that dropout, this year and in the past, are 4 seeds that are facing two plus hour trips, along with all the financial issues that come with it, to get their head kicked in. That is what makes things different than basketball, baseball, etc. First round district games don’t involve long trips and financial losses every year.

Kentucky doesn’t need six classes of of 32 teams making the playoffs. There was routinely bad matchups when this was the amount of teams and only four classes. To many teams “make” the playoffs in Kentucky and this is what it leads to. I am sure I am in the minority on this, but if keeping 6 classes, I think only 16 per class is enough. If they are going to keep the current format,I know there is a couple districts where one or two good teams might not qualify, but you’d be shedding more bad than good. I will be interested to see how many three and four seeds win this week.

As far as penalizing the teams who have tapped out, I’m not for it. I’m really surprised there isn’t more already.

I kinda like this idea. Maybe offer the spot to the team with the highest rated RPI that didn’t make the playoffs. Of course that wouldn’t work for 1A or 6A because all of them make it.

I’ve long been in favor of 3 teams per district but they’ve allowed the top four for 33 years now so I doubt that will ever change.
