What penalty should teams that withdraw from the playoffs receive?

It's punishment enough for these kids to not get play 1 more week.

I don't favor sanctioning any team for withdrawing as there can be a multitude of reasons why teams would opt not to do it whether because of injuries, cost, etc.  I'm not a fan of letting everyone in

None but if someone doesn't make the playoffs they are aloud to take their spot.

  • None.

Football already plays less games than other sports. Players work all off season, practice all the time to only play a minimum of ten games. The amount of games is not a problem. Plus as people mentioned, no one seems to have a problem with baseball and basketball where everyone makes the playoffs, because the district tournament is the start of the playoffs for those sports.

So I think going down to 2 teams per district just isn’t enough at all. I could maybe buy going down to 3 teams per district making it. However, the same argument applies that I just mentioned above.

I'm going to challenge this argument by saying that MOST basketball districts are geographically small enough that a team isn't taking a 3-4 hour bus ride for their butt-whipping.

Yes football does play fewer games than the other sports, but is it disproportionately fewer than at the collegiate or professional level? 10 HS football games, 25-ish HS basketball games, 25-ish HS baseball games? NFL is 16 games, right? NBA 82, and MLB 162?

I'm sure I don't have the all of the numbers right. I'm not that up on the Limitation of Seasons bylaw.

Just go with 3 teams. Reward your district winner with a first round Bye.

From the Great Google Machine on the NFL:

Every team will play 17 regular-season games with one bye week. Teams will alternate seasons where they host nine regular-season games and one preseason game, or eight regular-season games and two preseason games. The AFC will have nine regular season home games in the 2023 season.

No punishment.

There are enough smart people across the state - both in and out of the KHSAA board of control - that - if anyone TRULY cared - should be able to come to a table, sit, and figure out a better way. Doing it this way is just not productive at all for too many teams.

My guess is more teams than not, would be pleased to either have their season done or have a bye week before the post-season starts.

So from what I can tell there has been 3 teams that have forfeited out of the playoffs. In 1A Ballard Memorial who was playing Campbellsville and Trimble Co. who was playing Newport Central Catholic. In 3A Pendleton Co. who was playing East Carter. Is that all as of today?

You know, we have this silly six class system in our tiny state and four teams from each district getting in the playoffs and inevitably you have teams drop out of the playoffs because so many of the teams are pathetic.  What penalty should teams that drop out face?  I think anyone that drops out of the playoffs should automatically be out of the playoffs for the next year and maybe the next two years.

Or we could get rid of our stupid playoff system that puts far, far too many teams in the playoffs.

Anyone?

Pathetic is rather a harsh word don’t you think?  Not everyone can be a Highlands or Beechwood.  They may not be very good but they give their blood, sweat and tears to a sport they care about and declaring them “pathetic “ is very disrespectful.

It is a little harsh but nearly everyone here seems to be pretty soft on this issue so we all know nothing is going to change for better.

I like that idea.

In many cases being required to play in Round 1 is punishment. Imagine if you are a coach or a player on a 1-9 team, you have to travel 100 miles to play a 9-1 team during a week that might see the weather at 40 degrees and rain. Most folks in that position would say we did not earn this playoff game and we candidly would rather not play it.

Since we are already letting everybody in, I'm okay with this idea.

I believe a 2 win threshold fixes all. Teams that don't have an opponent due to no 2 win qualifier gets a bye in round 1. Teams that really want to play in the post season will find a way to schedule in 2 wins. Teams that can't get 2 wins "earn" their ticket out.

Maybe adults feel that way. For the seniors on the teams they would most likely give their arm to play that game. I feel bad for those kids. They know they're not going to win but to just not play isn't something I can get behind.

None.

I get that many playoff games are happening that probably shouldn’t be and some teams probably don’t want to be playing, rather that’s overall collectively or some for it/not for it.

There’s going to be sub .500 teams that make it and that’s not a problem. When you start thinking about the 0-10/1-9 teams, that’s when the bigger question marks start coming in. Teams can go on a run even when struggles happened a lot but there’s also realism, which motivation is a big part of.

With keeping all this in mind is why I firmly believe we don’t need a six class system. I wouldn’t have an issue with five, but six is just too much for Kentucky.
