We keep trying to take away anything that could possibly be difficult for kids. We Already give rewards to kids for anything. Now want to not make kids have to learn how to try to have some sportsmanship. Yes losing SUCKS and is heartbreaking when it ends your season. Majority of us on this board have all been through it. However, that is also one of the lessons sports is suppose to help teach our youth, and that is how to handle losing. In life you’re going to have to deal with loss and just many other tough things in life. So being able to learn how to suck it up, and be able to walk by and say good game after a hard fought game is something players need to learn how to do. Let’s not give them an out from having to do that. Which probably over 98% of the time it overall goes smoothly. 
 

Let’s stop making excuses for our youth. Which in this case the adults in the line need to be the ones setting a better example. The players actually did a good job after having a heated battle, it was a coach apparently from the losing side that needs to learn how to handle defeat.

I'm not one to make excuses for kids.  This is all matters that should have been taught at home.  This line just puts everyone, adults and kids, in a bad position.   I usually try to avoid those type of situations if I see them coming.

These are also types of matters that can be taught through sports. Which as I said 98% and probably more 99% of the time it goes smoothly with kids doing it the right way. 
 

As I said though the sad part about this game is the players actually did handle the line well. There was a lot of heated moments on the court, but at the end when it was time to shake hands the players were handling it well. Sadly it was adults who couldn’t handle it.

My understanding of the situation is the bolded is what should probably be the focus. The tension started pre game when a Lloyd assistant was running his mouth to a certain player's dad during warm ups. Things boiled over in to the actual game with players and then post game in the hand shake line with the same assistant.

All very good points.

Let me ask you a question future. Do you wear a seatbelt in the car? Do you lock the doors to your home? 
These actions and many others are called preventive measures. We do them  to prevent bad things from happening.

To each their own. Good Luck to Cooper and Newport in the finals.

It's a shame what happened in the hand shake line as well as on the concourse. Lloyd asst coach (McClendon) was at the very front of the line congratulating the Newport coaches and players and looked very "classy" in doing so which does not shock me. He is a great dude. Maybe the rest should have taken his lead and nothing would have happened.

Both Lloyd and Newport have great teams and for it to end like that after a hard fought game was disappointing. Practically no one is talking about the game. The radio guys mentioned on more than one occasion that the game was very "chippy".

I would assume there will be more security and school personnel there tomorrow night. Best of luck to both Cooper and Newport. Both teams are red hot right now!

Several years ago the KHSAA put in a recommendation to not have them, but left it up to the schools, with the understanding that if anything happened, there would be repercussions. That seemed to help. 

I would make the argument that there has never been more of a need for a handshake line. People need to learn how to deal with adversity and loss. It will happen to every single one of us. If a coach can't handle himself and the handshake line, get rid of him.

I understand what you are trying to say. However, to continue with what you said about seat belts, and locking the door. If the goal is to prevent any bad thing from ever happening. Then we as humans probably should never leave the house. Definitely shouldn’t drive cars because you are driving something that can be a deadly weapon. Every kid should be home schooled, this way no chance of a conflict with another student. All food should be put in a blender, to take out the risk of possibly a piece of food getting lodged in a throat and stuck. Sports in general shouldn’t be played because there is always a risk of a possible serious injury. 
 

Unfortunately there is going to be some risk in almost everything we do in life. You can’t prevent everything. So what becomes the cut off then? Let’s not try to teach kids how to have sportsmanship and be able to deal with a tough loss, because of the 1% chance there could be conflict at the end of the game? Where do we stop then? Should the games just not be played at all? Because if there was no game, then definitely no risk of a conflict at the end.

From where I sat and watched, McClendon was really the only adult on the floor leading kids. I’m not trying to put him on a pedestal, but everyone else was in the melee itself and I noticed him trying to separate adults from each other. He also stayed on the floor to make sure nothing else popped up, as well as talked to a Newport Administrator after both teams had entered the locker room. 
 

And spot on. The adults in the room have taken the spotlight from anyone talking about the game. Very sad. 

Okay, who is said assistant that started the whole confrontation in the handshake line? He's not a student, so it should be fair game to be named.

If it went down as described, he should no longer be allowed to lead young men in any fashion.
