officials lost control of the game. I was describing the atmosphere. Also clearly condemned the adults. The officials were bad. Both ways. Simple as that. That atmosphere bled all over the arena. Players coaches and fans. All should be ashamed.

I was there. Was honestly watching two players in the handshake line, waiting for them to exchange. Knew something was gonna happen but was shocked it was the coaches going at each other. And it wasn’t a minor as some are describing. It was an initial confrontations, a secondary scuffle, and a third. And from where I was sitting, the majority of both staffs conducted themselves shamefully. 
 

I will say Kudos to Andre McClendon for keeping his composure. I saw him actually at the Newport bench talking with admin folks afterwards, doing what seemed to be what a HEAD coach should be doing. Making sure everything was alright.

Maybe I’m old school, but I’m glad the officials allowed the kids to play. It was a very physical game, and I don’t think the officials let it get out of hand. They let the first scuffle go by without anything called. The 2nd time around, they T’d up each player and there wasn’t any other issues the rest of the game. Yes, there was some jawing and bumping of shoulders, but nothing excessive

As for the end of the game, it’s a shame that adults have to act like that. It took away from a hard fought game. However, the boys from both teams during the 2nd game, were out in the concourse area talking and joking around like nothing happened. 

I stayed in my seat between games. I heard nothing about fights in the concourse. Odd that the news did not reach me.

How much security should you need at a high school event? Multiple site managers, sure. Some of the security staff that work the arena regularly, okay.

At a certain point we need to count on adults to be adults too.

Exactly. Matt Wilhoite and Tony Bacigalupo and one other “game manager” were the first to step in. Then a few others, not to mention, I counted up to 6 police officers on the floor or by the benches by the end of it. 

The handshake line chaos would have happened regardless of how many people were there, it ended as quickly as it could have as the adults were children. And clearly some of them have insecurities as they believe attempting to run around those who are holding them back, or even after it initially died down, to act “tough” and keep shouting and pushing towards the middle. 

The after the game concourse incident is where I was concerned about the lack of the response time of security or police officers. It went on for nearly 10 minutes before it finally ceased. 

One CovCath fan came down the aisle and started shouting, we need cops up here right now. 

Even after that, took 3-5 minutes for them to get up there.

If we’ve come to the point where we can’t conduct a handshake line in a high school sporting event then we’ve fallen and failed as a society. We’ve failed as parents, as coaches, as administrators, and as schools.
