Somerset recently refurbished the court at the near 90 year old Briar Patch. I know I'm biased but I think this floor is outstanding. 

This gym that is attached to the high school was built in the 1930's I believe and at the time was one of the largest in the state.

For decades it had a tile drop ceiling but during the last remodel several years ago it was removed exposing the steel girders.

While this is a quaint little gym compared to most today, it absolutely rocks when Pulaski comes down the street to play the Briar Jumpers.

The court is definitely sharp. 

That is a good looking floor, and a great addition to an already cool campus with some amazing views.

That gym looks awesome. Problem with the new schools is they don't put any character into the architechture. 

I like the use of stain (or lackthereof), instead of paint to differentiate some of the areas on the court.  It allows the wood to play a role in the look, instead of a paint color.  Which, in turn, allows for the areas that ARE painted, to stand out even more.

JD, you mentioned that it used to have a drop ceiling in it.  So, for instance, in your first picture...were those windows not visible before?

They were not visible when I was in high school. The ceiling was just above the letters spelling out JUMPERS.

This has caused me to add Somerset to my list of places to visit for a game in the upcoming season.

Once played there for Garrard in an All A regional game against Danville that ended when Danville attempted to throw a long inbound pass and it hit the drop ceiling, eliminating their chance to score!

My favorite place in the 12th Region. Somerset hosted the regional tournament for almost two straight decades in the 1940s, 50s and early 60s before the new county consolidations opened up larger gyms at Pulaski, Laurel, Boyle, and Lincoln.

That’s a beautiful gym. I’ve only been there a couple times, before these renovations, and was highly impressed with their facility. It is old but has been very well taken care of over the years. Nostalgia at its best! 

I graduated from the old Burnside High School in 1964.  Pulaski County at that time had several high schools including Burnside, Nancy, Shopville, Ferguson, Pulaski County, Eubank and Somerset.  Southwestern was not in existence at that time.  Somerset was the site of most of the tournaments then and they have done a great job of keeping the character of the location over the years.

Wow.  This place has got to feel huge compared to what it was back then.
