District Tournament Question

Featured Replies

This is thrown around a lot during playoffs in football. So I want bring it to basketball…

is it time to eliminate first round games of district tournament and only top 2 in each district play? Based on some of the blow outs tonight.

Because we don't need a week between games, there is no problem with the present district tournament format.

The game that is somewhat insignificant is the district championship game where both teams advance to the regional tournament.  However, it carries a title of District Champion, and awards you a district loser in the first round of the regional tournament.

Not a chance! While there are blowouts there are also games where 2 teams are fighting with all they have to get to the District Finals and earn a trip to Regions. Those games are electric and what high school sports are about.

I wish people had this same energy for the first round of the football playoffs.

I'd be fine with eliminating districts and just have a 16 team regional tournament. In 7th Region is 19 teams so take the 16 top teams based on RPI. Top 8 teams will be paired with bottom 8 teams and do a random draw like they do now for the bracket.

No!  Lots of great 2/3 games.  Would hate to miss out on these.

So we don’t care 22 teams had running clocks?

No because they played at a gym either on their campus or more than likely no more that 20 miles at the most...It's about travel expenses...insert eye roll.

You have running clocks in the regular season games, they occur in the holiday invitational tournaments.  It's just part of game.  These smaller schools has put in just as much work as the other schools, don't take their last hope to advance from them.

Teams have practiced and played games throughout the season and should be in the district tournament. For many schools they realize they’re not going to win the tournament but their goal is to possibly spring an upset and make it to the regional. I know that’s not a big deal for schools that are in the regional tournament every year but for small schools it is. I know at my high school, Owsley County, the Owls were only in the regional tournament one time between 1967-1982. They upset Wolfe County my senior year in 1972 and earned a trip to region at Breathitt Coliseum.

Most district games are close, over in just over an hour (particularly if there is a running clock), and most importantly, not so much risk for players to be physically hurt because they are up against a vastly more dominant team.

I get the point you're trying to make, but I'd also hazard a guess that the percentage of running clocks across the state for district pales in comparison to the amount in football.  A lot more teams play basketball, so you've got a much bigger pool of games to find these running clocks.

Also, if you are team that is going to get their clocked cleaned I would think they have every right to forfeit their attendance in a District tournament.

BUT how many teams do this?  Probably zero......I think this is your answer, should we eliminate it.....NO!

Enjoy another game with great atmosphere and have faith & hope on your side.....

There is always a "David" lurking in these tournaments and then you will have a story to tell your grandkids in years to come!
