The current visitor bleachers are bigger than that and only 3 years old or so.  They are not huge mind you, but they are bigger than those.

Those are old pics. Newer seating are much larger, plus the "standing room only" along the railings are a good view of the game. Bring y'all some camping chairs.

The Purples will head just over 2 hours northwest to Danville (AKA Titletown) to battle the super-steady 4A Defending State Champion Boyle County Rebels.  Thanks to my man @WestDanville for preparing the Boyle County side of things in the post right after this one, while I focus on the Purples.

First things first: 

These 2 fine schools combine for 16 state championships and are regularly in the discussion for the State Championship picture for their respective classifications.  And this year is no different.  However, these squads have only met one time on the grid-iron amazingly and that was back at the 2007 Rafferty’s Bowl at WKU.  The Purples would end up winning that game 49-21, but after researching it a bit, it was a very close game into the early second half when 2 Boyle County turnovers produced quick points for BG and helped provide the final margin on the scoreboard.  Names like QB Trent Steelman, WR DL Moore, and RB Tavin Barksdale for BG and QB Perry with WRs Marshall and Crutchfield for the Rebels date this game.  I looked DEEP in the VAST BGPs vault of threads for the old thread on this game and found the following:

Last Weeks Recap:  Bowling Green 38 – Hopkinsville 7

After a tight first quarter that saw mainly defense and a Pick 6 by BG JR LB Davis Fant, the Purples were able to open things up a bit in the second quarter when the Purples defense set the offense up with great field position and new FR QB Deuce Bailey seized on his new opportunity to lead the BG offense and threw his first varsity TD pass to RB Matrix Halcomb and then found a seem and dashed 34 yards to paydirt on the following series.  I think BG wore the Tigers down in the second half and produced the final score.  Outstanding games by many, but most so by JR WR/DB Bert Kibawa who showed why he certainly should be playing on Saturdays somewhere in a couple years.

After struggling to earn 39 points in 3 games, it felt like the plumber opened the pipe this game with basically BG doubling their point production for the season in one game!  Was it all perfect; not in the least, but what I like most is BGs continual effort this season to address what isn’t working for the betterment of this team.  I am hopeful that will continue as a few more tweaks could pay dividends as well.  But great job!

This Weeks Outlook:

Bowling Green got the most important personnel change they needed to compete at their highest level.  A move that will pay off not only now but for 3 years (hopefully) after this season!  Now comes a stretch of games that will really tell everyone where the Purples stand at the moment.  Boyle County is a team that does not beat themselves – you have to beat them.  The Purples should be coming into this game feeling good about leaving the offensive struggles of the first 3 games behind and taking last week’s gains forward into the teeth of their schedule with Boyle County, Father Ryan (TN) and South Warren in consecutive weeks. 

The 2021 version of the Purples begins and ends with its defense.  They have been rock solid all year, as expected.  I anticipate that to be consistent this week as well, but with a notable step up in competition. Most notably Boyle County QB Jagger Gillis is a deserving Mr. Football candidate and a 5^th year Senior (for lack of a better phrase) and his presence over the BC offense provides an unyielding confidence that will be a real challenge for the Purples defense.

I don’t know as much about the Boyle County defense other than they are well coached and struggled against a completely new LCA offense in Week 2 and rebounded very well against a good Pulaski County team in Week 3 and Week 4 at Henderson County.  The revamped BG offense should pose BC problems from the standpoint of now you have a mobile QB that also has the ability to throw the ball.  That’s difficult at any level.  However, Deuce Bailey is a freshman and there are sure to be some growing pains as he now looks to strengthen his comfort level over the BG offense going forward.  

I’ve been looking forward to this game ever since the schedule came out, as I’ve always wanted to come to a Boyle County game!  Friday’s the night!!!  I’m thankful for both teams putting it together as IMO it will help both teams get ready for their tough district slates and into the playoffs.  Hoping for no injuries for either team!

I remember their first meeting. Steelman hit DL Moore on the very first play from scrimmage for huge TD.

Should be one of the better games this weekend. Purples seem to be playing with a bit more "swag." Although it is asking a lot from a Freshman to go into a place like Boyle County (and facing a 5 year Senior QB) I think Deuce with the correct play calling from the sideline and him using his legs when needed, could perhaps get the job done. I expect it to be a 4th quarter game for sure.

Games like this is what makes high school football so fun. Safe travels to everyone and good sportsmanship to both teams. Should be a dandy.

I must admit I'm a little surprised with the lack of responses in this thread.  While there are upwards of 25 plus they are mostly of logistics and field layout and jabbing PurplePride92 in good fun.

These are 2 of the better teams in the state who haven't meet in roughly 14 years.  I personally think both can make a run at their respective state championships this year even though both have very strong challengers in front of them.  These are 2 of the better fan bases on this board and perhaps there is mutual respect for both, which I get and I am in that boat of completely respecting the Boyle County program.  I guess I just thought that one of the best games in the state this week would get down to more football talk with only 1 day to go until game time.

Enough of my pity-party and on to my keys to the game for both teams:

Boyle County -

1.  Jagger Gillis has been the best Boyle County player for awhile now.  He needs to be the best player on the field again for the Rebels.  He won't be nervous; he's been in multiple big games and done this before.

2.  The Boyle County defense must hurry the young BG FR QB up.  They don't have to sack him per se, just make him uncomfortable.

3.  While SR WR Cole Lanter will always be Option #1 for Gillis, I feel in this game someone else will need to step up for Boyle.  Who will that be?  RB Bodner, WR Kelly, someone else?

Bowling Green - 

1.  You can't let Jagger Gillis beat you by himself.  But he is going to try to.  Look at these eye-popping stats through 4 games this season and see why he should be near the top of the Mr. Football conversation:

Passing:  50 for 76 for 672 yards 8 TDs vs 1 INT.

Rushing: (#2 on the team) 34 attempts for 159 yards and 5 TDs

Tackles on DEFENSE: (#2 on the team) 28 tackles; 1 TFL and 1 Sack and 2 Fumble Recoveries

He is responsible for over half of Boyle County's TDs on the year!  Think about that!

WOW!  SUPER Impressive!  Purples must make the 5th Year Senior earn everything he gets including limiting his running lanes.  If BG can pressure Gillis that is big.  They don't have to sack him, but hurry him.  And in the 4th Quarter hope he is a bit winded.

2.  BG Offense must take what the BC defense gives them.  I anticipate Boyle will load the box and make the Freshman QB try to beat them.  Seems reasonable.  BG must put the young QB in a position to make plays.  He's capable, but his second game starting varsity ball at Boyle County, we'll see.  Get the ball to your better players in space and advantage BG.

3.  Super Hoptown WR Daisjaun Mercer was limited to 4 catches for 62 yards and 0 TDs.  BG needs to implement the same coverage schemes on Mr. Cole Lanter , who is another outstanding WR at Boyle County.

 

Other intangibles:

- Turnovers are a given.  They will be huge in this game.

- Kicking game is big for both teams as well.

- Boyle County through 4 games has less than 30 kids playing 3 games.  Conversely, BG has less than 40 playing 3 games.  Does that matter?  Maybe.

- Boyle County is very balanced on offense averaging 150 yards rushing and 142 yards passing.  BG allowed Hoptown 78 yards mostly in second string time late in the game.  Will Boyle County have more rushing success on Friday night?  Would be huge for Boyle if they did!

Looking forward to a great game and my first trip to Title Town!  Go Purples!

Great write-up as usual. And good point about the lack of interest. It seems like there is a lot of lack of interest on this board as whole in general. Maybe it's just me, but just seems that way.

Glad see some player info for Boyle. I have no idea what to expect. I think the key is if Boyle County can pass the ball successfully. If they can do that, they will probably win. If it is a low scoring game I think BG wins.

BG's offense while better is still limited. And the defense can't be expected to create 7 turnovers every game like they did with Hoptown. 

Someone posted a 28-14 score with Boyle County winning. That was my first thought when thinking about my prediction. However, after looking at Boyle County's schedule, my opinion swung back to Bowling Green. I think it will close regardless and could go either way.

Hopefully I will be able to make it to the game in person. Never been to the stadium so it will be cool to go to a place I've not been.
